I do not want to go all live sand so what would you guys suggest. I am looking to make a deep sand bed at least 4 inches. I could mix up some dead sand with a bag of live sand. Would play sand work or would that cause more issues that anything else. Let me know your thoughts.

Don't use play sand. Use dead sand with some live sand. I have 20-30 lbs of live black sand I could give you if interested. I'm about to break down my 75 and don't wanna sell the sand at a per pound rate. PM me if your interested.

What is the big deal about using play sand? I thought silica was inert? I know some brands of play sand clump but other than that what else is bad?

Silicates fuel algae growth. The best sand on the market is CaribSea Reefloor Special Grade IMO. Not coarse enough to trap a bunch of detritus but not fine enough to blow around with good flow.

If it didn't come from the ocean, or bagged and sold as such, there just might be issues. I'm just sayin'.

This may be a blast from the past but is Southdown still around? I picked up a half a pallet of it from Home Depot back when I set my 200 up (2001 or so). Just rinsed the fines out and worked like a champ.

One of the best reasons to use Aragonite is that it will help keep the PH up in your tank. Aragonite is a carbonate mineral, one of the two common, naturally occurring, crystal forms of calcium carbonate, Aragonite sand holds a lasting reservoir of calcium carbonate, which is slowly but constantly released to buffer and to hold up the pH, that is worth a lot! :D

Was this a fish only tank?

No, mixed reef. Southdown was a Caribbean sand (not silica) sold as play sand. Use to pick it up at the Depot fairly cheap. Did a quick search on it, doesn't look like they sell it anymore; the company was bought out "several" years back.

If you go to Wet Web Media, they talk alot of play sand, and southdown. Southdown, has been bought out two or three times. You have to look it up by the ICU number, or something like that. That is the only way. When it comes to silica sand versus calcium carbonate, the only real issue is buffering. They have debunked the silica leaching into systems fueling drastic amounts of algae. There is one WWM doctor that has a 300+gallon system that has 200lbs of silica based play sand and 100 lbs of live sand to seed. 4 years later (or something around that) no issue. The buffering capabilities are still under speculation. Some say it does some say it doesn't. The biggest issue with play sand is contaminates, and texture. Some silica based sand is jagged and can cut your sand sifters. Some is however, tumbled and nice and soft. Sorry, I have done a lot of research on this. When it comes to sand though, do not use "sand blasting sand". I know here in Savannah, we have a company that sells and delivers several different grades of masonry sand, and shell, and gravel. If you have a company such as this locally, I would check them out. Their per pound price should be great, and they will have different grades and colors of sand to choose from. If you are worried about silicates, take a bottle of vinegar and a cup. Sprinkle a little of the sand in the vinegar, if it bubbles its calcium, of not you are dealing with silica.

Thank you IRahmatulla, I can see you have done some research on this. A few years ago when I had my 125 I did use the Southdown sand and I was satisfied with it. I have someone on here who is willing to give me 20-30 lbs to help me seed so I just need to get the other remainder. I do not know of a place around me that sells sand, so if anybody Marietta going north to canton know of somewhere I can get some please chime in. Things are moving fast since I joined this forum. I have a source for live rock already and now some seed sand. Next I need a RO/DI unit has anybody bought one off EBAY for like 125.00 Is it anygood?
