What is this growing in my tank?

A picture is attached. It appears to be a dark purple to black.

Is it hard or soft, will it blow off with a baster or is it firmly attached?

it is hard as a rock. it chips off. fused tightly to live rock.

Well there are tons of varieties in all different colors from light green to dark purple and I know that it can seed from particles floating in the water. That, plus you saying it's very hard and chips off? Sounds like coraline algae haha

This is where I was going, please disregard Rich's comments...I had a plating coraline once upon a time.

How long has your tank been up?
I've got some very dark purple almost black that started early on my rock. What's odd about yours is appears its growing in the shade! Is that true?

It appears the consensus is that its coraline. I will keep everyone posted. The thing is that it isn't spreading or expanding but popping up in spots as you see in the photo.
