I have a 65, never ran a sump before.
Theres a one inch hole and the return pump will be a mag 7.
what size pipe should I be running? does it matter all long as it is hooked up?

you need to use a size bigger pipe than the hole. (use reducer bushings to get up to the higher size pipe). You should also do a 'durso' stand pipe that will help reduce your noise. I'd use prob. a mag 5. If you use the mag 7, you're gonna have to put a ball valve on there to throttle it down, otherwise your pump will pump your sump dry before your water can drain into the sump.

This may be worth noting... my drain can keep up with my Mag 9.5 but it's 1-1/4" ID pipe.
Even so, I'm about to test a Mag 7 to slow the flow down through the sump. If your sump is small, that may be another consideration- keeping the flow rate reasonable.

Go with 1 1/4 no matter what you do. It is much much quieter. I run a Mag 7 on my 65 full throttle. I run a Ocean Runner 6500 on my 90 - about 1700gph but it splits off to the fuge before it returns to the tank. There is allot of was and allot of opinions on how to do this. My suggestion is to take a look at how other people have theres set up and go from there. Heres a pic of my 90 gallon setup. This is by far my fav because you have lots of control over how much water goes where.

This was a small piece of macro I used to test the spray bar. I wanted a good spin inside the fuge.

The 1" hole you have is it for the return line or the overflow line is that the measurement with a bulkhead installed or not installed? We probably need this info to offer you any advice.

the hole that i said is one inch has been drilled for a one inch bulkhead. Sal at saltwater city drilled it and put the one inch bulkhead in there....

should there be 2 holes? I was just going to run a 90 over the side of the tank for the water return....

i think the PVC i got is 1 1/4, ill have to look again. Also its a 29 gal sump and I just bought a mag 7 off ebay....so looks like im using the mag 7

Use 1 1/4 " pipe for the durso over flow and yes the return coming over the back works fine. make sure u secure it some how. 3/4" return line I would think

okay good, haha i didnt want to go get another one drilled.
yeah that was my second question about the return pipe.

ill keep posting if/when i have more questions. The satdn is almost done so I really hope to have this tank running soon...

The larger hole in a standard overflow fits a 1" bulkhead and I concur with the 1 1/4" Durso style drain.

The return bulkhead supports a 3/4" bulkhead and that's the diameter of return pipe. A mag 7 at 4' of head will be just fine - a 5 isn't enough and you CAN run it wide open. The Durso standipe can take 600 GPH (rated, I've seen them take a bit more) - and your Mag 7 won't push a full 600 gph at 4' of head - so you can run it wide open. I don't have a flow chart handy but I'm thinking it's around 500-550 gph at 4'.

I think the outlet on the 7 is 1/2" so you'll need a 1/2" female to 3/4" adaptor - and depending if you want to hard PVC or flexible tube the pump to the bulkhead will decide if you need a male barb or other on the adaptor.

+1 What size sump are using? I am running a mag 7 on my 120 with 5'6" head height. IMO slooooowwwww flow through the sump.
