So im upgrading to a 140 from my 75 in a few weeks. Right now ive got a coral life 125 on the 75w 30g sump. Im not sure what size sump im going to get/make for the 140 but its got to be small enough to fit under the 72''/18'' stand.

So my question is how long do you think it would be ok to run the c125 on the 140g system assuming i dont get the extra funds right away, and what skimmer should i get? not looking to break the bank here either!

btw its a predator tank so everyones pretty messy

I would say no. The CSS are fine skimmers when tuned and maintained properly, however they are overrated by about 40% (IMHO). You should be able to pick up a used Octopus pretty cheap, and given you have messy eaters, you may want to upsize. However since you don't need 00ppm nitrates, it's not a huge need to have an oversized skimmer.

You should also be able to find a Bubble Magus capable of handling your tank new on eBay for a good price.

Reef Octo would be a good choice, I agree. Sometimes you can happen upon a good deal on a used MRC (something like an MR-2) which would do an awesome job. Are you limited to in-sump or can you get it inside the stand but outside the sump?

ok thanks for the input guys!

and i dont have to do in sump because i dont even know how big or small my sump is going to be yet! but i am running my pump/pump(s) (if i go closed loop) external do they will take up a little room too.

id love to get a 55 gallon and throw some baffles in it thought :) just gotts see how much room i really have when i pick it up this week end

I've got a 55 under my 4x2x2 120 and i love it tight fit but plenty of room. also have a reef octopus nw200 works great as long as you keep the air line free of debris. thats the only problem i've had

I run a 55 gallon sump (36 x 18 x 19) under my 150 to allow some extra room and i use a MR2 for a point of reference...
