OK......I just had my first "What the Heck!" moment in my DT. I was walking by and noticed what resembled a small puff of smoke come from my LR. I looked closer and saw what looked like the end of a hermit crab or snail shell with movement inside. It continued to put out about 5 or 6 more small puffs before I went to get my camera and of course when I returned it had retreated back into the LR.

Any thoughts????? I'm going to get a pic if it comes back out.:wow2:

It's On Fire!!!! Quick, throw some water on it. :-) Hope you get a pic. I want to see this.

Rock burrowing crustacean..... I Forget the name... someone else will know it

could be something spawning. don't be surprised if your tank gets cloudy

I can't say for sure yours is the same as mine but I've seen stomatella snails doing that regularly in my tank. Totally harmless with no effects other than more stomatellas.

That's it!!!! I found a youtube video!!! <u><div class="gc_ifarem_title">Stomatella Spawning - YouTube</div><iframe style="width: 70%; height: 400px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-aCyZiV3x60"></iframe></u>

I feel better now! I knew I saw smoke. And I'll take this as a sign that things are going well with my tank!

Kinky!!!!! LOL

i have one of the largest astrea snails I've ever seen in my 120 and he has done that every time I have moved my tank. from the 55 to the 120 and then again when I moved the 120 to the new house. apparently they do it when stressed.

Should be alright, from what I know, and I don't have any specific experience to say differently in reef tanks, however I'd note my biology studies both past and present indicate that many species, if already mature and prepared, can be triggered to procreate when they sense vital nutrients running out, or other environmental stresses are occurring.

Granted, the following example is a fungus, however... the main body of a mushroom is not the mushroom itself, but rather a network of very fine tendril-like structures known as mycelium. A single organism can cover literally many square miles, just beneath the surface of the soil. The mycelium only sprouts the reproductive body of the mushroom itself when it senses available nutrients *in that specific spot* running low, i.e. after it has already used all the resources of the medium it was growing in.

Anyway, just my $0.02 I'm sure your tank is fine, as I recall having seen similar in mine in the past, but I would not base an assessment of my tanks health (which I'm not implying you are either) on reproductive attempts alone.

Stomatellas are *good* hitch-hikers.

Sounds like they were having a good time ;)
