With this thread I would like to discuss sand beds.
What type of sand bed do you have thin, thick or bare bottom? Why?
- Is it for looks/personal preference?
- Is it for a particular animal that requires a deep sand bed?
- Do you have a deep sand bed for denitrification by cultivating anaerobic bacteria?
- Has anyone with a thick sand bed had any issues with hydrogen sulfide?
- Do you have a bare bottom sand bed to prevent detritus from building up?
- Bare bottom to prevent scratching glass?
- What type of sand do you use?
- Do you change your sand every few years?
- Has anyone noticed when you mess with the sand the next day your fish has ich?
I have a thin sand bed no deeper than half an inch, mostly a quarter of an inch. Just enough to cover the bottom glass. For me I like the look of having sand but don't want to be siphoning the sand, having detritus buildup or have pockets of anaerobic bacteria forming. I do not have any animals that require a deep sand bed. I use the CaribSea Aragonite Reef Sand. Aragonite is also known to help with PH. It is not a larger grain but not too fine that the powerhead with blow it all around. I am also in the process of changing out sand slowly in small areas, not to affect my biological filtration.
