Not new to the hobby but its been a while since ive had a tank operational. Looking to do a 75-125 gallon reef tank in the next six months or so for my 2 year old daughter to look at since she loves them. I have been perusing around the net looking at all of the different types of live rock and they all look stunning. Im just curious as to what all of you out there are using and or prefer......fiji, java, bali, vanuatu?....or just a mix and match from base to top?

If I did it all over again I would buy a full load from either Marco Rocks (Marco Key Largo) or bulk reef supply. Thats my opinion FWIW.

I have 100% fiji in the tank.. 260 lbs worth.. If I had my choice though.. Marshal rock all the way.. They stopped the harvest of it though..

that being said....ive never even seen that marco live rock....looks AWESOME...love the shape and texture of it.

thanks so far.

The reason I would pick base rock is to get away from hitch hikers. I bought my rock 6 yrs ago and I am still fighting majanos and such.

I really like Totoka Rock. It is all old pocillopora heads. Interesting texture, and locks together like puzzle pieces. I have Totoka in my 300 gallon. And the Marco Key Largo is nice as well.

Personally, I don't see the need for using ultra colorful $7 a pound rock for base rock. A certain amount of your rock is going to be covered by other rock, unless you are going for an open aquascape. I would source some cured base rock from another reefer, then top it with the nice colorful stuff.

Any live rock is going to run the risk of having some pests on it (outside of cooked LR, I think), unless you only use dry Marco type rock. Marco Key Largo is actually quarried, which is why it doesn't need to cure. It has no organics on it.

You need to weigh the benefits vs the risk of using cured vs all dry rock. I used live stuff because I couldn't stand the thought of waiting a long as I would have to to cycle a system only made of dry rock.

Marco rocks are nice and pourous. Also check out the bulk reef supply rock. Both are great for using as the majority of your rock. Acroholic is right on with the totoka LR to seed the rest with

BRS Eco Rock is supposedly the same as the Marco Key largo. Looks the same. Seen that said on multiple threads. Priced about the same.

Pretty sure he was just having some fun. Besides, join date and number of posts have nothing to do one's experience level.
