I’ve found myself less and less interested in my tank lately, prolly since my female clown died. I’ve always gone through interest cycles and downsized at various times but I’m not sure when to take a longer break. We just had our third child and things are a bit crazy. Has there been a point that drive you to take a longer break? The only thing keeping me going is my male clown that I’ve had for about 11 years now. Maybe another downgrade?

It's a hobby. When it's not fun anymore do something else. However, keep the dry goods is my suggestion. Resale sucks and you will probably come back someday. I have three money pit hobbies, cars, reefs, and boomsticks. All our money pits and my wife knows they run on two year cycles with me lol

I took a long time break when I got tired of changing filter socks…. It was a task. I mean I was gathering 10-20 at a time in a bucket… Use a washer to wash and then bleach it and then air dry…. It took me out slowly but surely….

One thing we should know is that even if all things gone, you get to keep your experience and knowledge you’ve gathered. Something no one can take away….

Conglats to your 3rd child!!! Kids over hobbies all day. Best investment is in a human beings ;). One day maybe your kids be into it with you. That’s how I started my reef hobby from fresh water when my son was born hence my id is project1004 (his birthday). He is about to be 17 but he is not into this hobby. Lol

Sometimes, completely removing it from your life will give you new perspective. Focus on what’s important…. More time for sure…. You can have tiny tank but your joy will be based on current state…. But your old clownfish should stay with you or someone you know well… And trying to spark up that joy is going to be hard…. And Break up is good sometimes …lol

When I came back, I was able to distinguish important things from other noises. If I didn’t take a break, I do t think I would have done as good...

I did make a mistake of jumping in without planning. I hope you are better future plans. Whatever you do, do what makes you happy~

You won’t get a 2nd chance to spend this time with your children.
Aquariums will always be there, whenever you’re ready.

FWIW,
I’ve taken several breaks over the years and never regretted it. When I came back, the passion was still there.

I took a break right before my kids were born. It took me almost 18 years to get back into the hobby. Would not have given up my time with my kids for anything. Enjoy your children when they are young, blink and before you know it they will be grown and out of the house.

The hobby will always be there. Last year I dismantled my 200 gallon “dream tank” after a decade long run. We are now empty nesters, and generally downsizing and reconsidering our priorities. A broken seal in the display led me to make the decision a little earlier than I had hoped: we just took the whole system down rather than spend the $$$$$ for a new custom show tank and the effort of transitioning. It was the right decision, and I will definitely have another (smaller!) tank in the future. Yes, one of the fish was an egg-laying female clown I’d had for 15 years. But the right decision at the right time!
