I just spent the last 30 minutes trying to search the boards before i ask a stupid question but i couldn't find an answer. I just transfered to a 220 gallon reef tank and have a sump for the 1st time. The tank transfer was 3 weeks ago and when i look in the reef sump the white filter pads are dirty. I am wondering if i should rinse the filter pads off or if by cleaning them i am getting rid of good bacteria? Any input would be appreciated.

if its filter pads, they should be changed out if dirty; if it filter socks, you can wash them; the bacteria is in the sand and rocks, but post up a pic if possible

If you have live rock then that should take care of your good bacteria, I wouldn't worry about what may or may not be on the pad. I change my pads every 2 to 4 weeks, depends on how dirty they are, you don't want the pad to turn into a nitrate factory. This is just my experience, so wait to see what others do. I also don't reuse my pads, I buy in bulk and cut to size, but if you use a filter sock then I would definitly reuse those, as they are expensive.

I have a canister filter that I use for mechanical filtration as well as holding a bag of carbon and GFO. I clean that whenever I change the tank (3 weeks).
