Being so far out of town I really need to find some online. I realize purchasing in person is best... by far... but there's just no way.

whats the general consensus on how long you should wait before adding a clam into your system?

I have a derasa clam i bought after my tank was 6 months. 6 months later it has doubled in size. I think as long as you feed it and give it good lighting it will thrive. i feed oyster eggs 3 times a week and use halides.

Oh so you need to feed them I thought they didn't need to be fed

It isn't a matter of how long the tank is set up... but they def need a well established tank. As far as feeding.. I never have and have always had really good luck with them. NOW, they MAY benefit from it... I just haven't found it to be the case.

Clams don't have difficult requirements, just specific ones. They do not NEED to be fed in 99.9999% of home aquariums. They are filter feeders, but our tanks typically have enough food floating through for them, based on their photosynthetic behaviors too. Clams NEED calcium and alkalinity. They use it rapidly. And they NEED a lot of light. You cannot photosaturate a clam as you can a coral. However, clams can tolerate abnormal water conditions well. If you are willing to supply extensive light, calcium, and alkalinity, and your tank is cycled, clams should be no issue.
