Is anyone using Matrix [larger rock size] in their sump? I'm looking for the larger white rocks to place in my sump because I don't want to use any bioballs.

Any help would be appreciated? What weight size do they come in? A ballpark estimate of cost would be appreciated.

I'm using normal matrix in my sumps bio ball chamber. Only a few pieces slipped through. The bigger stuff is pond matrix .....don't remember ever seeing it, but I was never looking

I am in Augusta so obviously dont know where you can get it locally. I would probably have to recommend the regular to you. It will have more surface area per volume than the larger pond size. The bigger pieces used in ponds, so I've heard, have less surface area per volume but the pores don't clog as fast in a detritus heavy pond. The bigger pieces allow more debris to flow around/through them.

Matrix is a new thing for me. Can you use the larger pond rock in Reef sumps?

Edit: To everyone out there:

Is anyone using a combination of the smaller and larger matrix in a reef sump? I'm thinking about using both, first the larger matrix pond rock on the bottom and then place some smaller matrix on top of the larger.

What are you thoughts? It's for a sump going on my initial setup of a 120 gallon aquarium.

How often do you change out or clean the old matrix and what size aquarium sump do you have it on?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

NP wannabee I have found out the looser you can keep it the better it works I have mine sitting under my filter socks just in a small pile nothing holding it in place. I put mine in some tank water in a bucket for a day or two when I got it to saturate it cause some of it will float once it all sunk I put it in my sump.
