They are small white spots on my zoanthids and the whole colony that I have has these dots. The majority of the polyps are closed. What is this and what should i do?

Kinda sounds like zoa pox. I'd google that and see if the symptoms match.

Check out this link, it is a great article on how to treat if it is zoa pox. There are pictures there that you can compare to what you have as well.

3 consecutive days of the above mention Furan-2 dip should save at least a few polyps of each colony/frag you dip. Has worked well for me.

Thanks guys! Zoa Pox is what I was afraid it was going to be. ): Okay, this is what I have: Reef dip by Seachem and Coral RX. Will those work?

Furan 2 is the med of choice for pox.

I used the Reef dip you gave me at the meeting. There aren't that many spots, maybe 10 total. A few fell off! If I continues to get worse I will definitely be in to get something!
Thanks!

(Oh, by the way, those filter pads are awesome! I have never had such clear water!!)

If the spots fall off it isn't zoa pox. Zoa pox is like pimples under the skin.

Some of them are like that! I see some REALLY big spots that are under the zoa. So far, more of the polyps are opening than before!

Hey guys....

its been a long, long time since I posted here but google search brought me right to this thread.

FYI, I have been an active member of my club down here so when I have questions I usually post there. Nonetheless, I am still a card holding, and proud member of the ARC!

I do miss this club as the club down here is nowhere near as active but it is a good group of ppl. I hope you are all doing well.

Anyway, now to my question....over the last 1-2 mos ive been losing zoas all over the place....something that has never happened to me before. Prior to this the tank has been stable for way over 1 yr with no losses (at least no coral losses).

Recently, the zoas have simply been withering away and disappearing. I have done dip after dip (in Coral Rx, Tropic Marin, Lugols) with no luck. And after each dip, I see no predators (ie - sundials, pyramid, spiders, etc) that come off the coral. I do have an insane amount of asterinas and they are all over the rocks of the dying zoa's but I really dont think they are the guilty party because I have never seen one on an actual polyp. They just seem to clean up any dead tissue thats left (either way, I bought a harlequin just in case).

Today, I noticed some white spots on the zoas and that is how I ended up on this thread. I have to take a closer look tomorrow to see if it is in fact zoa pox but I have a few questions:

1) Can zoa pox wipe out half a small colony overnight (10-20 polyps)?
2) In some cases the polyp looks healthy but begins to lose its "grip" on the rock and then detaches itself. Could that be a symptom of zoa pox?

Either way, since nothing else I have tries has worked...Ill probably give this Furan-2 thing a try.

Oh, and yes.....my tank params have been very stable minus a 2-3 day PH spike due to an overflow issue. But the zoas were fine for a quite a while after that. Also, since then my alk has been at about 7 and Ive slowly been raising it but I dont think thats the issue either????

Thanks for helping out!

Good to hear from you! Go to this link I posted earlier in this thread:http://www.zoaid.com/articles004.php"><span style="color: #22229c">http://www.zoaid.com/articles004.php</span></a>

It has an excellent description of zoa pox with pictures and treatment. Unless you see the pox, which are whitish pimple looking things, then from your description I don't think that is what is ailing you. The melting away of zoas has happened to others including myself but unfortunately I've never seen a good cause or cure.
