Yellow Fiji Leather Question?

I just received a Yellow Fiji Leather and one end of it is brown and looks like a layer of flesh is gone. The area it is in makes me think it may have been resting on the sand. Does that make sense and if so will that tissue grow back or am I looking at something more ominous?

Here's a picture with the damaged area on the left.

Wow that sucks bud :(. Mine also had a lil area that looks like that, but not nearly as bad. I'll keep an eye on it, but I don't think its something to be worried about.

Yellow Fiji Leathers are known to be bad shippers, which is why you rarely see them in local fish stores or in people's tanks (I'm very proud of the one I've had for almost 3 years!) because they don't ship well and are very susceptible to tissue necrosis - from being covered, damaged in shipping, rest within the sand, or just because they haven't had enough flow.

It's tough to save one in the situation you have it in - they seem to go downhill fast. I'd recommend taking a good look at the coral. If it has black, necrotic areas on it, then those need to be removed with a very sharp scapel. If the areas are just 'wilted', then I'd leave them alone and provide good flow (gentle - enough to lift up the polyps and gently move the coral). Mine took about 6 months to really start looking good the last time I had to move, so don't give up until it's obvious, but if it does start flaking apart, it's time to take it out of there.

Good luck- they're beautiful corals.

Chris,
Aren't finger leathers easy to prop? I thought it was as easy as slice and mount. So can this one just be cut and remounted?

Curious because I am getting a red chili and thought to break it down to some smaller frags...same family I believe.

Thanks for the info.

Chris

Thanks for the info and it looks like you are correct. I just checked again and it looks like that area just rotted away. Wow, did that ever happen fast. I'm going to go trim some of it away right now.

Ok, I cut away all that looked bad last night and this morning another small chunk was laying on the bottom of the tank, but the rest of it is looking ok. Hopefully, it was just some shipping damage and the rest will survive.

Thanks, Jin! It is looking a little better this morning but still has not opened any tentacles. I actually had a smaller one attached to the rock as well, but I'm not totally certain it is a Yellow Fiji Leather. It is much thicker and more green looking than yellow and also has not opened any tentacles. Here are a couple of pictures of both. The top picture is how it looks now. You can see in the second and third pictures how it went from turning brown to just disintegrating in a very short time. The last picture is the other something that may or may not be a Yellow Fiji Leather.

Unfortunately, my Yellow Fiji Leather fell off the rock it was attached to last night and by this morning it was all brown so I took it out and tossed it. I've heard good things about liveaquaria.com's guarantee policy so I will be calling them tomorrow. I'm not sure if they just give credit or will send me a new one, but I hope its the latter since that was the whole reason for me ordering to begin with. I think it is a beautiful coral and I would really like to see a nice one sitting in my tank.

Bud,
sorry about the leather not making it, mine (which was ordered in the same shipment as Bud & Jin's) is still looking ok. I am not seeing any indication of decay but will keep an eye on it. All the other livestock we ordered in that shipment if alive and well in my tanks.. thanks
