I realize there are different types of pistols and that there personality can vary from species to species and aggression can increase due to age and additional stock factors .
That sais I'd like to know about some of the stuff ppl have seen or suspect of there pistol shrimp.
I ask this because after adding orange skunk pistol with purple legs to my tank if had some deaths. First was a small crab in the porcelain family but not a porcelain I forget the name.
It was aggressive , chased all the inverts and fish that came close the first day , it cornered my sally lightfoot and I broke it up , so it was dead the next am as the pistol only comes out in the display at night and that's where I found the crab. (probably picked the wrong on to bully is what I figure happened , if the pistol did kill it that is iv got no proof)
After that I noticed he started snapping all the time he killed the largest of 4 peppermint shrimp I got the other week (this I saw , he carried it in to his home holding it in both claws like a trophy above his head. 4 days later my Big cleaner shrimp 3+" body just disappeared , I thought possibly he's molting in the rocks but he never turned up later I found some shell and an antenna , I'm really bummed over it , and the shrimps left over body parts were rite out front of his hole (he set it outside like room service in a hotel) I miss my cleaner already , it was one of my favorite creatures by far .
So maybe this pistol has acquired a taste for my friends apparently , and is rather ugly to my fire fish pare , they spook and jump in holes in the rock and all I hear is pop, pop, pop .
Some references if read say its just a noise , some say he can kill fish and other invert with his claw poping .
Does it vary from specie ?
I may end up trying to trap it becase I don't really want to disassemble my reef .
Idk what I should do , iv started squirting more food in his home when I feed coral hoping to curve the aggression.

The other reasons I'm thinking he has blood lust is I found my sand sifting star today with 1/2 of. 2 legs (looks chewed off) other than a hermit I don't think I have any other predators that could have doen it.
I'm sure the star will re grow its lost limbs but what if whatever's doen it comes back tonight for round 2 .
I can't blame the pistol for this , and I'm not calling it a ruthless killer , but if having him will keep me from keeping others that I actually get to see and enjoy he may need to be caught .

Sorry didn't read your whole post. I have a pistol I just made a trap for yesterday. I wish I had never gotten it. He has dug up my tank, cant leave anything on the sand bed cause he gets it and drags it off.

I don't think he is aggressive but he is nothing but a pain. He paired right up with my watchman goby, but the goby has since disappeared. I figure a sand slide maybe?

They are fun when you first get em, but they grow up. I need to get him gone. Don't understand why anyone would every want one. Not their fault but from my experience I I would advise against them.

If you want to build a trap, look on youtube. Several vids there on how to make a trap to catch a pistol shrimp.

good luck.

I have had 1 Tiger and 3 Candy Pistol Shrimp and the only problem was I had to clear corals from in front of their dens.

Terry could you have a purple reef lobster? They get to about 5" and they are aggressive. Holley

My daughter calls ours "bull dozer". All it does is mow right thru what ever is in the way. He does keep the sand well stirred. If I had it do over I would pass it up and not have one. There fun to watch(especially in someone else's tank).

I've never seen it act aggressive towards anything but I do believe it eats hermits. Mine disappear pretty regular in this tank. But not in the one without a pistol shrimp. Mine is about 2-2.5 inches long up from about 1/2" about 2 years ago

I have a tiger pistol I love mine. he is paired with the Watchmen and I've had him for over a year and a half.

They are great I've got 2 in different tanks both with gobies. One word of caution.. Make sure you have all your rock secured or they will collapse your rock work and possibly on top of its self. I ended up picking the rock I wanted them to live under and put smaller rocks under the bigger rock so it would leave a gap for them to live and not worry about it squishing them.

No , he is a pistol , my tiger pistol was nothing like this one , he also has no interest with my watchmen .
He also stole a few mushrooms I was attempting to attach to rock , I think he's just a jurk.

I think this type is just rude in comparison to others , I'll probably try and swap him out with another shrimp idk , I need to catch it first my home made trap caught only my white hermits.
Is bet if I baited it with a live cleaner shrimp it would catch him.

Yeah. Mine lived in a piece of LR. The only way I was able to remove the shrimp was by placing the LR in a dry bucket until the shrimp came out looking for water. If I hadn't done my tank upgrade and removed the rock while swapping tanks he would still be in there. Mine never killed any other shrimp, but he was dang sure eating something. This thing would molt 2-3 times a month...

Try using turdukhen in the trap. These things love meat. Jk...
