Yeah, you shouldn't have ammonia in your tank! You might want to use some Prime by seachem to neutralize it! I had those things on the too! I'm thinking it may be your water, but a dip could never hurt!

I think that may be the problem! What cause AMMONIA to flare up like that? and would that cause my zoa's to close up and my hammer?

A number of things can cause it but let's start with the most common.

Have you added any fish or livestock recently? If so how much and what size system do you have? At the very least when was the last fish added?

Have you disturbed the sandbed (cleaning or otherwise)? How thick is the sandbed?

Have any fish died or gone missing?

Last water change performed before the reactionary water change you just did? Overall husbandry?

Do you have a skimmer?

I havent added any fish lately, my last fish i got was a lawnmower blenny and that was about 2.5-3 months ago. its a 20 gal with a 10 gal sump. my return pump got shut off the other day and when it started back up and sprayed what look like sand outta the bulk head! I got 20 LBS of sand in the bottom and moved a few things around maybe a little sand got stirred around. Ive had a couple of hermits and a emarld die on me but other than that nothing. it had been out least a month ago i did a water change before the one yesterday and no skimmer

What is your complete livestock list? or is it just a LawnMower and CUC?

Why did the CUC die?

I'm probably reading this wrong but is that two total water changes since you've had the setup or two recently?

no no ive done plenty of water changes that's the most recent one before the one yesterday. not sure why it died had it for a about a week. i have a wrasse and two BLK & WHT clowns and my lawnmower

hmmm

How much LR?

Possibly dead crab carcasses still in the tank? With that volume of water a couple hermits could lead to a small spike.

Kinda hard to identify the problem here but I would start working daily on bringing that Ammonia down. 10% water changes until its fixed. Then Weekly 20-25% WC from there on out to compensate for no skimmer.

Ok thanks for your help I try that out and see what happens!! Yeah it's been one emrald and a few snails and hermits! I'll try the water change thing out and see what goes!

Goodluck and let us know the outcome.

Keep in mind we also dedicated the problem entirely to ammonia, albeit it is a big problem and one that needs to be fixed. This may not be the problem with the zoas.

I feed my fish a half a cube of frozen mysis shrimp daily!! Should I cut back and do it every other day or what seem to work best?
