What size system?

Yes. They make more heat than you could imagine. I believe Mojos actually burnt the PVC pipes. IMO, way overkill for all but the deepest tanks

I had a 400gal but it separated at the bottom seam in 2008. Thought about getting another and starting it back up. And was shooting the idea of doing a reef instead of fish only.

That would have to be a deep tank to handle that kind of light. I have seen people here burn out corals w 400w MH's... you could probably use 1000 watts, but the corals would have to be acclimated to that kind of lamp.

If it's more light than you need, why? The extra energy used will eat up the "deal" on the lamps in no time. Plus, while I don't know what you've found, most of the time I've seen people refer to 1KW MH lights cheap they are the big industrial housings with the ballast on top. Those are "high bay" lights and are meant to be mounted REALLY high... which means very little spread of light.

You're right. The power probably would be crazy. And the lights have a external ballast that's not attached to the top. I found them on a auction website that I'm a member of. I looked up the brand of them and they are grow lights for commercial nursery. It's called Sunlight Supply. I guess they are sold for commercial nurseries in green houses.

Thanks for the input and replies guys.

Too many variables not revealed. How deep is the 400. How high can you hang them. What type of reflector.

It all depends on the application. I chose 2x1000's so I could keep the lights high above the tank (24") and have no dead spots anywhere. The tank area is cooled and hot air periodically removed out of the house so my chiller runs average. Also, the majority of the water in my system is in the basement and that helps with heat as well. My $.02.

Chris's tank is 96" x 36" I think. A single 1000 watt halide centered would have really high par below it and really weak PAR on the long sides. Two do a nice job on his tank, cutting the area into two 48" x 36" halves. Also, the bulbs are Helios 20K, unless he has changed brands, so they are not PAR Monsters to start with, when compared to a lower K 1000 watt bulb.

The tank is 36" deep and 26" wide. And I could hang the lights 24" above the tank. It's in my basement with 9' ceilings.

1000 watt metal halide is not too strong for a 36" tall tank. you can change the reflectors as well you would not have to use the high bay that come with the fixtures
