180g Oak Stand Canopy Build

Today I finished building a 180g stand and canopy for Larry Hand (elFloyd) and thought I would share the build pics with you guys. The construction is 3/4" red oak plywood with solid red oak trim. Larry is going to finish (stain) it himself, so I won't have pictures of the finishing process. Larry did promise to post a picture once he has it stained though!

Where is the best place to get the wood? I know Lowes and HD would sell it, but is there a better supplier for cost and/or quality?

On target for Labor Day weekend... need to continue my search for just the right stain... minwax does not give me the dark red I am looking for...

HD/Lowes has the cheapest price for 3/4" oak ply ($49/sheet) but it is garbage. It's C3 grade, meaning it is not truly stain grade plywood (the face veneer is ugly). I've also had bad experience with HD/Lowes plywood splitting apart when cut (the veneer plys come unglued).

I buy my plywood from Peachstate Lumber Products in Kennesaw. They sell B2 grade oak ply for $54/sheet. It's a bit more expensive but it's worth every penny. It's also a fun store to go to just to look around, they have an awesome selection of exotic hardwoods, full trunk slabs, etc.

Keep in mind any Sherwin Williams paint store can custom blend any stain color you want. I used them for the 70g canopy I built for vista, to match his existing stand. They're not terribly expensive either, I think a quart of custom color and their afternoon of trial & error to match the existing stand only cost me $12.

Nice, good info. Would you choose another wood selection for a painted stand like yours or stay with the oak? Also, what do you call the jig that allows you to drill those perfect angle screws at the joints? I assume it comes as part of a kit with special drill bits so the screw head has something to stop against. It really makes for a great professional looking piece of furniture.

Yeah I entertained doing something like this... but wised up. Dustin is gonna be putting together a BA stand for my 180 setup.

PS... you can get a cheap pockethole jig setup from HD for ~$30. It'll do the job. Not nearly as nice as the Jig that Dustin has... but wwwaaaayyyy cheaper.

Yes, use birch plywood, poplar stock and pine trim for painted furniture. Reason is, oak has an open grain which will show through the finish no matter how many coats of paint you apply. With birch, the finished product looks like plastic (assuming it is primed/sanded/painted properly).

It's called a Kreg pocket hole jig and is available at Lowes or Rockler. The "master system" is $139 and comes with the stationary base, mobile base, drill bit, long drill driver, short drill driver, face clamp, a selection of screws/coverplates, DVD, etc etc etc. It has everything you'll need to get started and cover a wide range of pockethole applications.

Or, you can buy the small mobile Kreg jig with drill bit for $20....but it won't have the quick/easy use of the stationary jig nor the precision alignment everytime.
