I agree. I buy all new, but each to his own.

30-100gallons
Fish, Coral, Liverock
Sump

Max. 20$/month maintenance (water changes, chemicals, etc)

So, you guys have free reign to build this for me and pick out the lifeforms that will inhabit this. And of course, once it is decided how it is going to be, I will take many pictures for everyone to see the bui

I would talk with Chris at Fishscales heres a picture of the 60 gallon rimless cube he built for me. Also he incuded the stand for a great price. Low iron glass on all sides, sump, return and drain plumbing.. I already had a skimmer and bought the light used from him as well. I love the tank and hes worth giving a call.

Ok, thanks for all the replies everyone. I am now thinking about a 60gallon tank. I do not mind buying used parts, I just do not want to buy a totally put together tank setup that is used.

speaking from experience eh? Im with ya - my next tank will be new

I've got a 90 gallon setup that includes all the equipment you'll ever need. You would just need to add the sand, liverock, water and livestock.

$550. You can see some pics of the setup for sale in the drygoods and livestock section.

I just don't understand insisting on a new tank. It's just glass. If it isn't scratched, what's the difference? As soon as you put water in it, it will be "used" anyway. Same goes for a stand-- it's just wood. Buying used will save you huge. I'd go used for the tank, stand, sump, light fixtures. You could have a nice 75 or 90 gallon setup, ready to stock, for under $500.

I'd also go "used" on the live rock as well. At 2lbs/gallon and $5/lb, new rock will cost you $750 for a 75 gallon system, where as $2/lb "used" rock will cost $300 and likely be covered in zoas, mushrooms and palys that you'd pay that much again for "new". It will give you a nice base to start stocking your system off, and things to trade for more variety as they grow. Also, if you get your rock from a working system and you can avoid spending a couple months waiting for your tank to cycle.

I'd get the the book "The New Marine Aquarium" by Michael Palletta. It has a good list of things you need to get set up, including the things you wouldn't think of at first. That way you can price out things to get a handle on all the "other stuff" so you aren't surprised.

I would be reluctant to buy a used return pump, but for a 100 gallon or less system, that will only run $100-$150 or so anyway.

Ill be tell you what the difference is, i purchased a used tank that appeared in great shape and it wasnt. The tank was leak tested and set up; ran fine for weeks then boom, 150 gallons in the living room. I only suggest it for a piece of mind and if you dont want to go through any headaches similar to that.I mean out of all the equipment you purchase, that is the one you dont want it to fail. And realistically, you never know what the person did with it before you purchased it. (ie re siliconed, replaced a pane, sat unlevel for a long time)Not all will be like this but this is just an example. So if it was me, id buy a new tank and go the rest used....just my two cents

I have a 60 cube and between the tank and lights alone i was at $2k. Just for those 2 items.

If you buy the tank new and look for good used bargains on the rest and don't mind being patient, you should be able to do it on $2k, but no way can you do all new for $2k. I'm not a fan of buying used, but I'm not constrained by a $2k budget. (don't get me wrong, $2k is a great starting point but you have to keep the whole thing realistic. So start with a list of what you need and figure from there.)

Thanks Smoothie! I was just about to say, I just put one up for sale and it has alot of the stuff you need to get started and it's NOT Used equipment! I mean it is almost a complete set-up minus the lights for a Quarter of what your looking to spend!

I had $8000 in my 90g after three years, with all the equipment, fish, coral, salt, test kits, stand build, etc etc etc.....and that was with me being as thrifty as possible and building my own stand.

If I were you, I would buy as much as possible USED....you'll save a ton. I broke apart and sold my $8000 90g setup for about $1600 total just a few weeks ago (everything except the stand). So as you can see, used is where it's at.

Whoa thats alot of dough, Could you break this down as how you spent it. I cant imagine spending that much unless coral was big part of it, Where can i check out some pics of that thing Dustin?
I think you could do very well with 2 grand I cant really talk here because i got most of my setup for free but I really havent spent that much I dont think. Lights do cost a great deal of it though hmm I need to do some calculating.

Man i hated when this happend to you bro. Something I did and will do from here out with a used tank is reseal it. I used 100 percent silicone black and it looks great and not a single leak. What I've found is that the sides take most of the wear and tear so thats where i resealed. The bottom sealing looked fine and was still soft so i didnt mess with it. My tank is supposed to be 8 years or so old.

I made an excel spreadsheet not long ago and listed everything I bought for my tank. I made a what I paid vs what I though it is worth if I listed it today..I came up with $8k on the "what I paid column" for my 210

Tank/Stand/sump/canopy - $900
Skimmer/Pump - $700
Lights - $700
Rock - $800
vortech - $450

etc.....you get the idear
