OK guys need some ideas on a 40 B sump layout! Baffle not to baffle? Fuge or no Fuge? If the consensus is to baffle it, what size (heights ) number of baffles, and what material to make them out of? The 40 B dimensions are; 36 3/16 x 18 1/4 x 16 15/16. Most of what I'm finding on the net are return center chamber, skimmer left chamber and fuge on the right hand end. Just wanted to see what some other folks have done! As always, "thanks in advance for the help"! H

do you want to use filter socks?

your recommended depth for your skimmer will decide how deep your baffles should be. so start with that. you will need 2 baffles for the bubble trap before the return pump.

in the simplest form of sump, you can have only 2 baffles, spaced about 2" apart, one on the bottom that is the height of the skimmer reccomended depth, and the other about 2" off the bottom to trap bubbles after they flow over the skimmer baffle.

so you would have 2 chambers, one for the skimmer, and one for the return pump.

the drains for the tank can flow directly into the skimmer chamber.

is this helpful? or do you want to get fancier and have more things in the sump?

Thanks Drummer! Yes I'm going to run the dreaded socks! I hate them but I also don't like all of the detritus in the sump! IDK how fancy I want to go more so than "effective"! I just figured I was going to have some room leftover in the 40 and wanted to make the most use out of it! And I wanted to figure everything out now before I do the big swap over to the 150! Prob going to be looking for a larger skimmer at a bargain as well! Hint hint wink wink, gotta be on the lowdown as the wife is beginning to get suspicious of all these $50 and $75.00 bargains I've been getting!

That is the same I run on my sump. Very simple and works well. My right compartment is just wide enough (maybe 6" if I remember correctly) for my return pump. The left side has my drain pipe, heater, skimmer, about 50lbs of rock and apex probes.

Now ontop of the right side of the sump I cut some thick acrylic to act as a shelf that I have placed 2 reactors to run Gfo and carbon in. My thought was if one or both reactors begin to leak, the water will run back into the sump. This was put to the test last week. I didn't tighten one reactor tight and when I check it the next day it was like a water fall. It worked and not a drop in the stand.

Good luck

I would run left side supply/sock and skimmer. Center rock/fuge. Bubble trap then return pump. Just my $.02.

If you want a fuge. let me know and i can make one to scale and give you specific sizes needed.

the sock holder can hold up to 3 socks across the tank. just find a small peice of acrylic and drill the holes you need across it, then figure a way to make something to hold the acrylic in that spot, you can silicone small glass tiles in place to hold it. that way the sock holder is removeable so you cana clean under if you need to.

Wellll ain't you the "Rtist"! Thanks Drummer. I have one of those hang on the edge sock holders it came in the deal and looks as if it would work. I'm still head scratchin on what route to take!
