in my 72" x 22" x 18" tank, what could I NOT keep?
With only 4x80w, you could only keep a few things - mushrooms, ricordia, zooanthids, maybe some leathers. I wouldn't try any kind of colorful SPS and definitely not clams. That's just not a lot of light.
Would it be ok to run a 60" over a 72" tank?
Sure - just center the light and be aware that your ends are slightly darker. I wouldn't do this with T5's - halides seem to have more lateral spread, but that's just my opinion.

Just make sure that if you're planning on a fixture that the halides do not sit directly above any tank bracing. It would kill the light penetration and not look good.

I say be patient and wait to hear from Doug. It is the holidays, after all - people are off doing other things.

dawgdude;437246 wrote: Doug doesnt come on that often. I am sure a few of the people on here can get in touch with him for you, I would really look at picking up that fixture.

Yeah, I have been wanting to go see it. I got a PM saying he would call me, but that was a few days ago...I know how hectic things can get during the holidays. Was hoping to be able to go see it while I had some time off...

Hopefully we can line something up this week.

Ahh I found the fixture...

I am curious to hear opinions on what this looks like...I initially notice there are no reflectors, but I am a novice at this...

That thing IS a reflector - white actually (and by definition) reflects ALL light...

Not saying it isn't a good deal now... just pointing this out since this IS a used fixture.

Doug said that the ballasts are included and the bulbs are new (plus three others). He'd still need a VHO ballast. Doug used to be a local sponsor who dealt in lighting, so the description is probably accurate.

Either way, a VHO ballast will run you about $160 at worst or ~$100 used. Should be closer to $500-560 total. He could even skip on the VHO ballasts for now and spread the cost out - it's not critical to the system...

cant argue with the price, but theres a reason people pay 150$ for a high end pendant :/
No doubt.. After getting rid of the Batwing reflectors and going with a LumenMax elite fixture the difference is night and day..

OK so I have an opportunity to buy a BNIB 72" 2 x 250 Watt Aqualight Pro, and XM 20K lights, for $850 Shipped. What do you guys think? I know it is stretching my budget...again, but I want to make sure I am setting myself up to be able to take my tank in almost any direction I desire, while still keeping my feet planted, and realizing that I am just a poor college student...again. (lol at age 39)

OK I am all over the place, but here is where I am...

Dougs fixture looks like a great deal, however not the aesthetics I am looking for.

My current opportunities...

2 x 6 bulb 36" Tek fixtures with bulbs - $900.00

72" AquaticLife 6 Bulb fixture (really 12 bulbs on the 72") - $700 (New product coming out in a few weeks, redesigned individual reflectors, fans, moonlights.)

72" 3 x 250 Outer Orbit used less than 6 months, like new pick fixture up in TN. $700

72" BNIB 3 x 250W Aqualight Pro w/ PC + Moon - $850 Shipped from CA.

Given the options you listed above, I'd choose this one. Nice design, good amount of light, good price, and you can see it in action before picking it up.

ares;437800 wrote: its its 3x250w, I agree also. you said 2x25w originally or maybe its a different fixture. otherwise, seems good, dont discount the value of moonlights, they are very nice and can be expensive to add later depending on how you do it.

Oops! Typo, yeah its 3 x 250 Halides with 8 x T5 36", plus moonlights. I really liked that this one because it was T5 and not PC...

I usually run an ambient temp in the room of about 74-75...think I will be ok with maybe mounting a fan in my sump for chilling? Would hate to have to not run my halides cause I couldnt afford a chiller for a while. Also, I have the ability to mount the light with the hanging kit if the legs cause too much heat transfer by being too close.

ares;437855 wrote: fan in the sump will help alot, if its an open top, you'll probably be ok too.

so it has 4 runs of T5, PLUS 3x250w? thats the one thats 850 from cali and NIB? seems like a no brainer if the build quality isnt total ****e.

No, This is the Outer Orbit from TN...Driving distance. and it is $700. The one from CA is a aqualight Pro, 3 x 250 MH + PC + Moon.

Outer Orbit $700 picked up.

Aqualight Pro $850 shipped.

I used to have a Catalina Ultralight (2x250, 4x96) it was a decent light..factor in more than likely having to swap the bulbs out though..
