WOW!! I cant believe im asking this. But ive been out of the hobby for a while and im doing a water change today on a buddies tank because it NEEDS one bad...

About how much salt per gallon do I need to use so it wont take forever with the refractometer...

Wish he still had his salt bag lol. I think it says on there.

I think most bags recommend 1/2 cup per gallon to get the water to 1.021, so you can gauge from there.

I can tell you this: if you are using Instant Ocean or Reef Crystals, three cups of salt will give 5 gallons of RODI water a Specific Gravity of 1.026.

on Seachem Reef saly 1/2 cup per gallon but I always have to add a touch more to get 1.026

Its instant ocean I think, its just in a large tupperware bin but im pretty sure thats what it is. And thanks ill start with a half cup and see where that gets me.

I'd guess the 3 cups per 5 gallons thing probably works for any salt mix that uses the 1/2 cup per gallon rule. That comes out to just a bit over 1/2 cup per gallon to get to 1.026.

Dave is dead on. I use Reef Crystals and 3 cups in a five gallon bucket gets me there.
