I want to turn one into a refugium, and am wondering if it would it be OK or would it crack the glass?

Go with an AC70. I've got one on my 5.5 with a light over it growing cheato and caulerpa. Works great! I'm not sure a 110 would even fit on a 5.5, and you'd have some serious flow.

Its a little halogen desk lamp that I picked up from walmart for like $10

I also have an AC110 on my 15gl. I took one of those lights from the Petsmart 2gl hexagon aquarium kits, cut slits in it so it would slide onto the AC110's back and popped a compact fluorescent bulb in it....it grows the macro algae like a champ, much better than the halogen.

Sounds good :)

Any halogen light will work at walmart? I want to make sure to get the right one. I think they have clip on book lights for your bed's head board. Would that work too?

If possible find an incandescent light that you can out a compact fluorescent in. It will grow the algae MUCH better than the halogen. Just find one (halogen or other) that will work for your space and allows you to get the light over the AC. I'd imagine the clip on would work as well.

Here is my AC110 on my 15 gallon.

Cheato needs trimming. (notice the slits to fix it to the AC110)
