Just trying to get a feel for where most of you place your ACAN's in your tanks, high, low, middle? I have LED lights if that helps. My current tank is a 24" tall 90 gallon.
Mine has been high, middle and low w/no success. It exists, but hasn't done much. I have 2 250 MH (new xbulbs) in a 75 which is shallow compared to the 90. Wish I could help, wondering myself what the secret is.
I have 1 that i put middle to low middle and it has gone from 1 acan to 8 smaller ones surrounding the 1 big one. However, I have a rainbow looking acan that hasn't grown much at all and its pretty much in the same general location.
mine are low in a 24" tall tank, near center front of the sand bed with AI sol lights. my rainbow popped out 3 heads and i have a larger green one steadily growing.
Middle to low is good, and lower flow. They don't require a ton of light and don't do well in a lot of light or heavy flow. Spot-feeding can help give these guys a little better chance at life. I managed to have a decent colony for a bit over a year and they just shrank & died in like 3 days for unknown reasons. They can be quite a challenge.
Near the bottom of the tank, but still off the sand. Out of the flow, else the tissue can get hurt. Also, dropping some whole shrimp on them every few days greatly helps with growth. I use 10" tongs and set a single piece of whole Mysis on the mouth twice a week. If it's taking longer than normal to acclimate, consider the change of coming from a dealers tank, to your tank. The water params will be different, the lighting is (odds are) different, water flow, etc... Generally speaking, Acanthastrea are very hardy coral, and it could just take some time. Hope it helps
I mix brine shrimp and reef frenzy in a bottle with tank water and a cap of reef fuel, I make a week worth at a time , I also feed this to my fish .
When I feed my lps and play's I take some of the food and mix it with reef snow Kents phyto, and brightwells gold m so I cover every food size and meet everything's requirements.
I mist my sea whip , and feathers as well.
You guys target feed your acans? I never have. I feed Nutramar Ova and CyclopEez every day on an alternating basis for a couple other NPS animals in my reef, so I guess the acans get some of this, but I don't squirt anything at them specifically. Guess it doesn't hurt.
