So i am planning on purchasing a achilles tang soon. Anyone have any exp. with them on here? I am running a 125 gallon tank 6 ft reef. I am thinking about moving the current occupants to my 65 gal tank and give the achilles a 125 to himself with all my coral (less fish less waste less nitrates). Can anyone give me any advice or knowledge they have on these tangs, its the main one i have always wanted and i am very well ready to give him the 125 all to himself.

I have an Achilles. This one I’ve had for close to a year. I kept one before him probably 8-9 years. Great fish and once established does very well. They are extremely active, probably covers 3x the ground of any other tang in a day. They like high flow and highly oxygenated water.

My biggest piece of advice is to get him eating and get him fat before trying to wean/expand him onto other foods. You’ll need to figure out his favorite food first – most likely nori. Mysis is probably second. Soak both in selcon or similar product to beef up nutrition. Skinny Achilles don’t last long … keep them thick.

Thanks for the advice :D. I already feed my reef a ton of different foods, i have a couple different color sea weeds pe mysis cyclops brine pellets flakes.( just hope he will accept them fast. I am looking forward to getting him soon, i am doing alot of work to my tank right now getting it back into tip top shape. After i get everything like i like it (protien skimmer going strong and such i plan on moving all the fish into the 65 and letting it set for a week or so with just my inverts and corals.)

Edit: Meant to ask if you could post a pic of yours please.

Agreed 100%. QT'ing an achilles will also be a great aid in getting it to eat well.

Depends on the size of the fish. But I'd say a 30 long would be good for smaller ones.

Sorry … I didn’t see your edit on asking for pics until now. I don’t have a good close up pic of him since he’s in motion most of the time, but here are 2 pics. The first one is about a year old when I first got him and was fattening him up in my 90g long refugium. His spot is a lot larger now than in that pic. He was transitioning out of his juvenile state when I got him. The pic below that is from about 10 months ago. It is a FTS, but he is front and center. He is out and about all the time.

I may put a pair of false percs in one day with him :) they are not to messy lol i want as stable clean ecosystem as i can get for him. my 65 will be my fish only tank once he is in the 125 with my other reef fish :)

BTW - Funny thing with this one is that he wants to be serviced by my cleaner shrimp, but since I've had him he goes full speed towards the shrimp and slams the brakes on to a stop right in front of the shrimp. He always ends up scaring the shrimp back and doesn't get cleaned. Well last night while working in my office I saw him slide up slowly and get cleaned for the first time. He actually changes color when he looks to get cleaned – his dark brown/black actually goes very pale across his whole body. It quickly changes back to normal color about 5 seconds after he leaves the shrimp. I saw him do that 3 times last night – color change every time. I guess it only took him a year to figure out how not to scare the cleaner. The ring around their eyes also change when being aggressive. He and my desjardini tang never show any aggression (a little surprising to be honest), but he seems to not like my mystery wrasse for some reason. When he chases him from time to time, the brown ring around his eye will change to a white blue – very cool. Again, it changes back in a few seconds.
