I’m thinking about adding some MH as a supplement to the MM lights just a couple of hrs a day. So should I do this or not? Or should I just leave well enough alone. I have a 120 (48x24x24) with 2 of the MM lights. It seems that I have a couple of things that I have to put in the shaded areas already so would this be too much light. And if so what size and wattage and color temp?

You are asking a pretty loaded question. I would say yes to the metal halide. Maybe a 250w SE radium.

Which corals are you having to shade?

the red cap, dendro and leathers. i still can keep GSP.

so you say 250w on each side? is that a bit too much? i was thinking around 150w the small style think its hqi bulb.

Are some of your other corals not getting the light they need while a few others are getting too much light?

Fwiw I put my mm led lights back in the closet. After approx 4 months or so of use my corals just didn't seem to be growing like I would have liked corals like my candy canes were slowly shrinking over time. I almost lost my purple hornets frag.

I felt my 250w se radium was too much light for my 30g cube but decided to try it out just to see within a week of running this everything is looking better now.

I think in terms of light output the led lighting is great and lacking in UV output.

I was thinking of using the mm leds in the future in conjunction with t5 light for UV supplementation. I think this would be a good combo because you would still get the shimmer effect and not as much heat as the halides

i have a t-5 fixture already. so what bulb options? when i had my t-5s before the mm i had
2- 10k wave point
2- 420 actinic blue zoo meds
1- 420 purple wave point
1- 460 actinic blue wave point

i did not like the 420 blue as it was not blue enough but there again i had and have no clue to what i'm doing. i'm like a doctor... i'm just practicing till i get it perfect. lol

i have a 6 bulb fixture. it's split 2 bulbs and 4 bulb ballast. if i did the 2 bulbs which ones should i get?

Having T5's on my 60 cube and now having 3 250 DE mh on my 180 I would never go back. I am now thinking of adding some led to supplement my mh's. but I will never get rid of these mh's.

I had several corals about dead in my 60 and transferred them to the 180 and the are doing great now. I do think the mh's had some thing to do with it.

I hear good things about ati bulbs. I would look into something that has a good UV output

So does mine and at this point I don't have proof to back my opinion but a mere 3 UV leds per fixture is not enough to make much of a difference. The 3 on mine are burnt looking on the bulb itself and don't light up as bright as the other.

In terms of actual UV output IMO doesn't even compare to the output of a t5 or halide from personal observation.

If your main concern is putting too much light over your tank whatever your decision as long as u monitor your coral reaction closely and acclimate your tank properly to the light increase you should be ok but each tank is different

To test UV LEDs : take a pair of glasses that have transition lenses. If they durn get dark, there is UVB present. If not, nope. When I stuck some transition lenses under halides, they turned black within seconds.
