when adding water to my sump from evaporation its close to two gallons at the end of the day ( usually when I get the chance at that time) ,and my concern was shock from hyposalinity, any suggestions ? thanks!

Depends on how big your tank is and if you have a sump, how much water that holds.

If you are really picky about it, look into buying and Auto Top-off unit.

I bought one and absolutely love it. Now, instead of filling my sump everyday with 2 - 3 gallons, I now only fill my ATO container once a week. Also, it keeps salinity solid in the tank, which means more consistency, which is good.

I bought mine from Oceanus Systems, who are also an ARC sponsor, so you get a discount with them.

Or you can buy a float valve and make your own.

You should really consider an auto top-off system for replacing evaporated water. This would provided the most stable environment for your livestock while relieving you of that daily top-off task. Check Aquabuys web site for an auto top-off unit. I used a unit from autotopoff.com and it worked great.

Plus it is cheap and relatively easy to do. You can go with a fancy unit like JBJ, Tunze or ReefFanatic (around $100). A mid range solution like autotopoff.com or if you want a cheap easy DIY try floatswitches.net.

I agree with all of the above, and would add this as well: you didn't mention what you were topping off with, but if you are using tap water, I would recommend getting an RO/DI filter and hooking it up to and ATO system. Otherwise, you are introducing many other things to your aquarium that you don't want to be there (disregard if you are already using RO water)

what size tank? two gallons to a ten gallon tank means something totally different than two gallons to a 100 gallon.

65 aga , 15 gallon sump , estimated water volume in all is about 60 gallons , water is from a RO/ DI ,open top (no canopy) one 250w halide , PC 96 w atinic 96 watt 10k, small fan to keep things cool,

You won't have any prob with hypo in that big of a system. Maybe if you had a 29g or smaller, then it could possibly become a prob.

You can either continue what you are doing and manually top off the tank, or look into building your own, or buying an ATO unit.

Thanks , for the info everyone,I will be going out of town for a couple of days so I will be investing in a top off system and using my Brute can as water storage
