Albino died

Actually it's not impossible. I had a shipment "lost" for 4 days once. In actual fact I'm almost positive it was in the ATL warehouse the entire time.

I tracked the flight, it never checked into cargo, I went to cargo, somebody supposedly went to look for it and it "wasn't there". I initiated a trace on it, and somebody from Delta called me every morning and every evening for 3 days to say they were working on it.

After 4 days, I had to go down that way to drop somebody at the passenger terminal, so I figured since I was in the area I'd go check at Cargo just in case. I had to convince somebody to get off their rear to go and LOOK in the warehouse... but sure enough, there it was and most likely had been most of the time. Left hand has no idea what right hand is doing and nobody is paid to think about that shipment that says, "LIVE FISH" that's been there for some days might need a second look, never mind the "Notify upon Arrival" mention on the waybill. Even though it was there it was never checked into their system and nobody ever notified me it was there (I never wait for the call anyway - I track it and the flight myself and show up accordingly).

Fortunately for me the shipment was all corals, and I did have some losses but a surprisingly high number survived. Delta did pay out a claim for "service failure".

Nowadays I don't leave until I have my shipment, no matter who gets annoyed with me when I politely insist that they physically go and LOOK for themselves (although that didn't help either with that "lost" shipment...)

Never underestimate the incompetence of the airlines.

Theres a difference between delayed and lost. There is NO WAY a domestic shipment of live animals would be delayed for 3 days.

By no means did I mean to reflect that on them, they shipped it same say. I've ordered a lot from them, every order always comes next day, two days at the most. That's why I think their was/is another factor.

Well maybe the wrong choice of words was used... either way it would seem that the shipment was not on schedule. Could have been lost, misdirected, on time and in plain sight and overlooked... semantics aside, the end result was the same.

Agreed. I never stated that there was a delivery snafu. I merely commented on the note that Delta was responsible and it was delayed 3 days. I didnt understand how that was possible.

I think your incident is quite anomalous, too. While I agree that airline staff arent the sharpest tacks at times, I also know there are a lot of redundancies to prevent situations like yours. I doubt that type of things happens (were live animals get misplaced for 4 days) but once in a blue moon.

It's happened to me 3 or 4 times in 10 years. Fish shipments put in the cooler (!!) plus another airline other than Delta, misdirected live rock shipments a few times. Rock is not a huge deal if it's delayed, just comes in a bit smellier and takes a little longer to cure.

Now, for folks whose freight transfers THROUGH ATL to other regions - it's a nightmare. ATL is known as the "black hole" of cargo.

If the flight is direct from the point of origin to ATL it's usually not much of an issue, but if has to transfer someplace... all bets are off. I've learned that if the shipper can't put it on a direct flight, I don't bother. Then once I get a bill number, I track the shipment AND the flight. Never wait to be notified - that's a crap-shoot at best. When the flight is landed, it usually takes 2 hours everywhere else but 3 hours in ATL for the cargo to be available. I don't wait for the stuff to "check in" electronically - I just go down there and wait until they find it. Sometimes it's pretty quick, other times... not so much.

You may be the unluckiest person on earth. As you know, Ive shipped live animals of all kinds excessively over the past ten+ years. And have never had something like that happen. Nor have I heard of anything like that- where a live animal delivery is lost for days.

Yes, direct flights are a must, but that goes without saying. And a 2-3 hour checkin after landing is pretty normal in my experience.

Heh you might be on to something with luck...

Friends of mine in other cities/states where there isn't a direct flight have awful stories to tell of lost livestock.

Flight from Phoenix to LA- cancelled. Enjoy your night in the airport. Flight home- you make connections. Corals dont. They are still sitting in Phoenix.

Trust me. Ive done this enough to know.

Besides, when I look up flights from ATL to LAX, I dont find any for 199 and find plenty of non stops for about 1/2 that. Where are you looking?

go to the airport and try to buy a ticket. I know its cheaper if u plan stuff out but sometimes some people dont. and is that round trip or 1 way?

Better yet, your corals and luggage go to Chicago... or Nome, Alaska...

Stranger things have happened.

My prices were round trips. The connecting were like $20 cheaper or so. And, seriously? All this about saving money and youre telling me you buy tickets AT the airport? Thats insane. 1000000% insane.

Fair enough. Did you ever find out what cause the death in the albino? I would look into that before just through more fish in there. But its your money.

It got a good look a Thanh; not much can handle that! ;)

Like I said before, Thanh, if I had your money, I'd burn mine.
