The bane of our tanks!! :moderator:

Though I doubt that's bryopsis. I've had a nice infestation of that before. The best way to explain what it looks like is a very small version of a fern plant. Not branchy but similar to hair algae.

fish for algae? no. i have turbos, hermits, and shrimp, but they haven't seemed to touch it.

i tried to get some better photos:

its hard to tell the exact type it is if its spreading fast it could be in the byro family caulerpa is also in this family its native to pacific islands. the rock in your tank looks like vanuatu its usuly sold as tonka (rock expot is baned but in hgh demand) a few things you can try

scrub the rock with a hard bristle tooth brush hold the rock wile you do i so you dont mess up your aqua scape then do a wc
wet skim set your skimmer to pull out wet foam his will help pull out more tds also change gfo carbon
switch to kent tech m it kills suff like that
there is also fish that can help
lawnmower blenie
rabitfish (carefull they hav poisonus fins but nice fish)
if you wont to try a tang a tomini would be best for you git a babby they are slow growers so wont out grow your 50 for a year or two
lower your feeding to small amounts a few times a day
all of these will help in all forms of alge contoll
on a nother note those white spots under the rock in your last pick are the shells or sponge?(sponge good shells bad lempits)

and nice shroom

It is sooo hard for me to see it to give a decent guess, but I'm still thinking Caulpera.

If you can take the rock out of your tank, you can cover, spray, and otherwise apply 3% H2O2 for a minimum of ten minutes, rinse with tank water and put back. Do that for all your rock.

Would that kill off everything on the rock? As in, if I did this to all my rock at one time would I go into a new cycle?

Sorry for the crappy pictures, my camera isn't that great with closeups!

I have some corals glued to the rock so taking it out might not be an option. I'm not too worried about it, it seems like it will come off easy for my next water change, I just can't find anything on what exactly it is

its hard to id algae there is just so meany types but it lets you know that nutrients are highin your system best algae controll is wc and not over feeding but takes time to find out as all tanks are diffrent
if your wc is not for a few days you can leave the lights off up to 3 days with out eny issues with your corals it will help with the removal.

It looks a little bit like sawblade caulerpa but much smaller than the sawblade I've seen.

It keeps reminding me of the algae you see when you look at pictures of the titanic for some reason.

Sadly, my algae may be due to the fact that I don't yet have a skimmer. I never read any ammonia or nitrites, and nitrates never get over 5 sometimes 10, and I've never had a large readable amount of phosphate. I'm about to finish college this month so this tank has been a very slow process due to money, but I keep up with weekly water changes and tests, and I don't overfeed.

Will a skimmer help with the algae a ton, or is there more likely a problem elsewhere? The tank is over 6 months old, a little less than a year.

Falos - not my photo (I linked the site I "borrowed" it from).

I've kept it (the caulerpa) from time to time. Haven't seen any of that variety in a good while. I used to keep it in my seahorse tank, back in the day.

Like any Caulerpa, it can become a nuisance.

a skimmer is not neaded it just helps gfo or phosguard is good to have running eather in a filter sock or best a reactor as phosphate will cause alge to spread fast.are you using ro,di for wc or tap?

Edit:
