hey guys well i have been fighting dynoflagic algea i think its called. then green hair algae showed up and i have been battling that... well now i am noticing some red slime algae along side the green hair algae anyone have any idea of what i could be doing wrong for all this to happen??

No need to treat RODI with prime. Prime is designed to remove commercial disinfectants like chlorine.

I've only seen a few of your threads, but aren't you pretty new to reefing? If so, chill out. Everyone around here is a great resource, but pick up a book or two and read.

(To answer your question, a new tank typically sees all or part of what your experiencing as part of its break-in/maturation stage. No sense in fighting it.)

so no need to worry about the red slime and everyone tells me to read..but i dont know what to read. whats some thing good tht will help me

No, what are you doing in general with the tank. You're going to have to list every detail about the tank and your maintenance practices.

Buy this book: The Conscientious Marine Aquarist by Bob Fenner. This is a great one to start with.

Less light less food more water changes. I ended up having to use algae fix to get rid of my huge Brown hair algae breakout. then my red slime took over and I used chemiclean cured it in 48 hours need to do a min of 20% water change and didn't seem to bother any of my fish, coral, or aneome but recommend as last resort.

like the post said reduce lighting schedule to 10hrs, feed every other or 3rd day and look into increasing you circulation in the tank. how long has the tank been running? are you using carbon or a phospate remover?

Okay we'll I feed on the 3rd day anyway I use the matrix carbon from seachem and the tank is running about 4-5 months and I'm doing the ten hrs a day as of yesterday

Edit: Also thanks for all the help everyone

Why 10hrs a day? All you will do by running it that long is grow more algae.

In nature, the sun doesn't rise to its highest point at 7 am and then immediately set 12 hrs later. It's a gradual process. The sun is only in a peak position for photosynthesis for about 4 hrs or so.

If it were me, i'd cut your lighting down to 6 hrs and focus on nutrient removal.

better yet just kill the lights alltogether for 3 or 4 days and then slowly bring up to a normal run time of about 8 hours by adding an hour every 3 or 4 days and that should help with the algae big time. but unless you're running a programable led fixture, its not a good idea to run your lights for more than 6-8 hours anyway because as dylan stated the sun isnt blasting light for 12 hours and then suddnly turning off. if your running some combo of t5, led, or mh than turn the weaker light on first and run it for a few hours then run your main light on for about 4-5 hours then have it off and keep your weaker light on for a couple more hours to better simulate nature. or if your just running t5s that have the ability to turn on part of the fixture do that first then turn on the rest and then repeat backwards and youre golden

oh and it would be helpfull if you gave us more details as raj stated. things like what food you feed, how often, water change schedule, water parameters, bioload, type of filtration and so on.

Okay I will do al of this when I get home and give details I'm just at school right now

Are you having the problem all over the tank or just in certain spots?

its all over the sand bed and over like two rocks but i cant take them out and scrub them they are thebase of my aquascapeing
