Well thats a whole lot of wasted effort....

I used a hole saw to rough mine up when I had one. Took all of a minute and it was ready to go. I cant for the life of me figure out why he added mortar to it. It takes all of 3 days for algae to start growing on a new screen.

I just dropped my mesh in the water surface - not only does it float it collects algae in both sides. And I never thought about roughing it up

We ruffed up by rubbing it on a concrete floor. It was so that water flows down longer while having more contact time with the light and algae get better hold on. You might get better algae growing even on the way you are doing!
