Hello all-

First off thanks for all the support over the years!

Quick question and advice needed urgently!

Apprx 3 weeks ago I had a couple acans out of my 20 or so colonies start receding on the edges. It didn't alarm me until the majority started closing up and now beginning to stn. Additionally, yesterday all my chalices and an aussie scolly began to show the same receding tissue symptoms. I performed some additional water changes over the last two weeks as this typically combats any problems but no improvements. My kh did get a little low (6-7) but averages about 8. Calcium is at 400 too. i will test nitrates tonight but barley feed my fish and do not believe this is the problem considering all 100+ sps pieces look great. The other issue I can think of is that my radium bulbs are old (approaching 8-10 months) and this could be a factor. Any advice is greatly appreciated as all lps are showing symptoms but again lps flawless and growing extravagantly. thanks!

Edit: Oops, I meant to say that sps are growing extravagantly. Sorry

I've never heard of that? can you point me where you got this info?

I've seen this an a couple of my acans as well, and I found and just corrected a long term low magnesium level in my tank. Also just ordered a new radium bulb for the tank. Gonna go from a single 250 Radium to a single 400 Radium over the 36" x 36" x 27" 150 they are in now.

did they state a number that would be considered high?

i.e. above 1400 or something

I haven't heard of mag burn myself. I maintained my mag levels at 1800 for two weeks and >1500 for at least three weeks after that when I was destroying bryopsis, and all I had happen coralwise was slight bleaching in a couple montis. This was with acans, but no brain corals in the tank.

My magnesium could have spiked super high a couple weeks back when all of this began as I was fighting bryopsis and using kent tech m. I noticed the high concentration pretty quickly though and quit dosing the tech m over the last three weeks but still no improvements. The LPS did begin to show symptoms about the same time as the concentration got to potentially high.

In my opinion the water changes should have adjusted the concentration over the last couple weeks a little though and should have seen some correction. But Again my tank is heavily heavily stocked so it could have sucked all the mag out pretty quickly without dosing or still could be entirely too high. The tank is so heavily stocked that within a week of shutting of the calcium reactor the tank crashes due to kh crash etc.

I will test mag tonight and see whats going on. FYI i did spike my mag a couple months back doing the same thing with bryopsis and went well over the 2000 ppm limit on the kit and no issues. I do not believe that i went higher than before but i will find out where its at shortly.

I have had issues with low kh a while back and symptoms tend to appear a week or so even after corrections so is magnesium something that can cause issues even after proper adjustment? thanks!

Edit: and i use pelleted carbon and no gfo. i did see another phenomena when all of this began happening. My refugium full of cheeta and callerpo did begin to crash and lost a good amount of macro into the system. I removed almost all of it last night though to take this problem out of the equation. Also, i did have issues with hair algea etc before and this has died off as well. Could this be due to the high mag or another issue?

kh-8
calcium-400
nitrates- undetectable with test kit
mad- 1350.

Everything seems pretty on point. Getting desperate so trying all new bulbs as my radiums are old and my t5's are worse. Has anyone ever heard of any lps pests or anything unusual?

I'd say the fluctuations in MAG are far worse than HI or LO readings...

I had no idea fluctuations in mag were such a big deal... I wish i had been more careful dosing the tech M...

The LED thing is all new to me so I lack the direction to head with brands and all... Any advice would be appreciated. Also, my tank is 8 ft long so the issue is buying enough leds to support such a large tank.
