Also what is this

I thought for the longest time it was just dried epoxy or something of that nature but today I scratched it and it came off like a soft silly putty. It is light gray in color and looks like dried Elmer's glue. Anyone know what this is?? Every time I go look at my moms tank there is something else in it. Lol.

I've been searching this and I think it's some type of sponge I'm not sure though?.?.

Yeah....I'd say sponge. I've got some in my tank except it's darker in color because it's behind some rock and doesn't get much light. I think I had some in my 93 cube that was purple.
