so ive set up a 30 gallon tank...i cycled it with Seachem stability...i got hints of ammonia and nitrites long the way which is what they claimed would happen then my nitrates went up and back down which i thought was all good...that tok about 11 days...i added a cuc which has been in there for about a week and a half to 2 weeks, so the tank has been up and running about 3-4 weeks...ive had an emerald crab in there , about 10 burrowing snails and some astrea...i last tested about 4 days ago and ammonia, nitrite and nitrates were all 0...on a whim today i bought a possum wrasse and introduced it....then i tested again (yes i know i should have tested today before introducing the fish)...nitrites and nitrates are 0 but to my horror ammonia is 0.50-0.60

i have been putting some flakes in the tank for the few crabs i have in there..could this be the cause of the amonia spike?...ive also not seen all the burrowing snails so i suppose one could have died as well...what should i do...should i use some of the stability or should i do a big water change?...im kinda panicking cause i dont want the new fish to die

i have a decent amount of live rock...my fear is that the tank never cycled in the first place...i thought i had a diatom bloom on the rock but it died down fast which was also not expected..i fear i rushed things...im 99 percent sure its due to the overfeeding...should i dose stability or should i try and see again if the tank wants to cycle?

Edit: would a water change help?

i dosed stability for 7 days like it said...i have the fish in my smaller tank but it may be too late..hes breathign heavily on the bottom...ugh cant believe i didnt test today

it was 3-4 weeks of cycling but 7 days of dosing stability like the bottle says...question is should i dose stability now to get rid of ammonia or just wait and see what it does on its on now that the fish is out

With the fish breathing heavily, it is in distress from ammonia poisoning, and will die if not removed immediately. Do you have 'new' salt water available?

If not, I have a 10 gal tank and 5 gallons of mixed water available I will loan you, if you come get it. I'm PM'ing my cell now.

Doing a large water change immediately will help, but not eliminate the problem.

i have 2 tanks..a 14 and a 30..the 30 is the new tank with ammonia issues...the fish is now in the yr old 14 gallon tank breathing heavily after being in the new tank for an hour or so..i really think the ammonia is high because ive been overfeeding the **** emerald crabs

Edit: and thanks for the tank offer too

I didn't see that you have another tank.

The fish should begin to recover soon, once removed from the ammonia.

Good luck.

i guess i am going to dose stability to cut the ammonia one more time then

yeah thats what i thought too...just a little bit worried that i havent had as many diatoms as i wouldve thought i had...after day 11 it seemed to have been cycled...its gotta be overfeeding or a dead snail

just an update, the possum wrasse is swimming along fine in the old tank this morning so i guess he is no worse for ware...i dosed the new tank with stability last night and the ammonia is back to normal this morning...im gonna keep dosing for the next few days and cut back on feeding the crabs...hopefully it was just due to the overfeeding...if its still 0 in a week or so i will try and reintroduce him..

also thanks for all the help and offers for tanks and water...its great to know u guys are out there
