I purchased my first anemone (Green Bubble tip) yesterday evening. I bought the anemone with hopes that it would provide a nest for my clown fish.

Within seconds of placing the anemone in the tank it has been surrounded by peppermint shrimp. I had no idea that they would harass this thing. As of this morning the anemone has mounted itself between two rocks, Since peppermint shrimp are constantly touching it, the anemone remains closed.

Is this normal and should have been expected? Will the shrimp ever go away and give this guy some peace?

It's normal for it to put its foot in a crevice. It's also normal for it to shrivel up as it expels the water in its tissues to draw in new water (ie to match its new surroundings).

Are the shrimp picking at it? If not, I wouldn't worry - they could be just looking to clean up feces or whatnot, but if they are picking at it that could be a problem. I've never known peppermints to eat host anemones, but since they do eat aiptasia, it's not outside the realm of possibility.

Keep an eye, and let us know if anything changes, but in all likelihood the anemone will open again once it has "water changed".

How many peppermints are picking at it? I can understand the aberrant behavior of one rogue Peppermint shrimp going after a large anemone, but for a group to change character in unison is unheard of (except with dolphins and women with cramps).

I'd suggest that they are cleaning it of detritus. If it continues for more than a day or so, you might have a problem. Keep us updated.
