OK i really need to start working on my sump. I have a 40 breeder, with 3 drilled holes.
My idea is to have a full siphon as the main drain and a durso as a secondary drain. Also are these the right bulkheads? http://www.petsolutions.com/C/Bulkhead-Kits/I/Replacement-Bulkheads.aspx">http://www.petsolutions.com/C/Bulkhead-Kits/I/Replacement-Bulkheads.aspx</a> And what pipes do i need to use? Also my overflow box is leaky, until i can get it plumbed how can i use the pipes and bulkheads to keep it from leaking to the floor?

My first question is what features should i include in the plumbing? Check valves? Where? Do i connect the two drains before they reach the sump? Should and holes be drilled into the drain pipes?
Next here is my sump plans for now. My questions are this. Are filter sock necessary? Does a DSB in a refugium have any benifits? I want to have a media tray for purigen carbon, and phosban, No foam/sponges, is this a good idea? Where is the best placement?

Are the holes drilled in the back or bottom of the tank? 3 holes you can do a BeanAnimal overflow with 2 returns in the corners like mine is done. If you have the room in your sump I would do a refegium, do you have a skimmer yet? You could also leave room for that. On my drains you only need to worry about adding some unions to make it easier to move the tank or change anything.

Its the bottom, the reason for two drains vs. two returns is what if on drain gets clogged? Then i have a second drain in an emergency

I have been doing a lot of research on sump builds also and most sites keep referring back to this site:

I am building my sump based on this site.

+1. Built both of mine from his plans.

Jodi your tank has holes drilled for 1" bulkheads. And it is drilled for a herbie. You'll need either a true union ball valve or a gate valve. On the full siphon

Good luck!

Edit:

Thanks man! I just read it and now i have one concern. It says not to tee off the pipes and that the ends of the pipes need to be submerged by atleast an inch into the sumps water. But that conflicts with my sump layout.
1. I was gonna have the main drain tee'd off to go to the refugium area. Where it would be submerged.
2. The main end of the main drain was gonna splash over liverock rubble.

Ok next issue.
Im using a 1 inch drain pipe as my main drain. Herbie style overflow. How can i figure out what pump to get or what rate i need?

go with a gate valve itll be a pain in the butt to get the siphon just right if you go with a ball valve

and just a couple tips use matrix instead of live rock itll give you much more surface area for bacteria to live on than lr rubble. and for your media (purigen, crabon, gfo/phosban) put it in a reactor they're much more efficient than putting the media in a trey. just make sure you put the purigen in a diffrent reactor than the carbon and gfo because you can reuse purigen and you cant reuse carbon or gfo.

Cant afford reactors atm.

What size tank and sump?

Edit: Nvm.....saw at the top. I use a mag5 on my 40

Just remember to bump up the return size on your return. Ex. Mag5 uses a 1/2 " return. Put a collar on it and bump the return line up to 3/4".
