I am ready to begin aquascaping my 180 and thought about using slate tile in the tank to set the live rock on and maybe for building some structures. My question is will slate be ok in the tank? Is there anything inherent in slate that might cause a problem. Thanks for your input

As long as the slate has never been in a freshwater setup that was treated with copper or the like......it should be fine...slate is naturally occurring....

Slate is often used as a decor in freshwater aquariums. Slate will not alter the chemistry of water (except in the slate containing felspar which may leech silicates into the water resulting in excess diatom growth in marine aquaria).

I remember seeing a video online of a guy using pieces of slate for his frags and he was saying that not only they're heavier and provide better stability he believes corals mounted on them grow better.

I used a few rubble pieces in my tanks and they seem fine
