anyone ever used petco salts

Hey has anyone ever used petco brand salt? I have heard that every salt has a advantage and disadvantage, the guy that worked at my local petland tells me to get the petco brand salt instead of instant ocean and it is cheaper but i dont want to get it if its going to make a bad diffrence in the tank.

It may compare to Instant Ocean if you're going FO, but I doubt this stuff will hold a candle to some Reef Crystals or Seachem Reef Salt. With this hobby, you usually get what you pay for.

i have been using instant ocean sea salt in the 165 gal bucket for my reef i think i will stick with it its only about ten dollars nore plus you get a few more galons and instant ocean has held good so far i may look into seachem tho

That price is for a 50 gallon bag.. Just got popped in the wrong place.. The cheapest place I know of is Keen Reef.. Its like $45 a bucket I believe..
There's no way that place is selling buckets for $17..

I was in a bind last night, accidental overflow from siphoning too much water into my bucket, and all our fine sponsors were closed for the night so I stopped by the Petco and went in for a box of salt, the lady behind the counter actually advised me to go back and get the small box of Instant Ocean salt over their salt claiming she had bad algae after using the petco brand.

I figure she was working there and wouldn't use it, why should I, not that her results couldn't have been her problem and not the salts.

A good high quality salt mix is one of the most important things in this hobby..10000% not the place to save a few dollars..

my corals have been okay i may start doing seachem soon just order in bulk get free shipping come out cheaper in the long run but i cant order it now i hate having stuff shipped lol its expensive lol

Check with the sponsors. One of them usually always has salt on sale.

yea the guy i sold my 29 gal tank to i told him to get instant ocean he went and got red sea cause it had a start up kit hydrometer and tests in it i tried to help him mix and measure it and it would not mix! I started with instant ocean and for now i will stick with it its been good for my lps and softies...

On that link, the description and everything is for the 160g mix. Might be able to buy 4 bags worth (to get the free s/h) then call and complain when it comes in that it's 1/4 the amount you were supposed to get.

Honest, no. Cheap salt, maybe. Teach their company the value of proofreading.

Yeah there's no way that listing is correct. Pricing is more in line with a 50-g bag.

Wholesale list (before any discount/distributor special) is usually more than what most of us sell it for. There's no way they can be selling it for $15.72 a bucket if you buy 10. If that's the case, I should order a few pallets of it. :lol: Wholesale list on it is close to $60 per bucket these days. Thank goodness for distributor specials.

I agree totally with the previous posters (although my opinion doesn't really count because of my "club status") haha. Buy good salt that you know is stable. I've used IO, RC, and now SeaChem Reef Salt. Of the three my pick is the Reef Salt, for various reasons that may or may not matter to any one else haha.

oh and if you wanted the analysis of the seachem reef salt. It is as follows. I've tested my new salt mix water and it is pretty consistent with the following... (Although I obviously dont have the capacity to test ALL THESE parameters).
