Thinking of using this on my 46 gal bow project? Is it overkill? It will be in my bedroom so i want something pretty quiet and failsafe for sure.

I think the design theory is fine...so long as you taylor it to the flow and volume of your tank.

Seems like overkill to me on a 46 gallon. Drill the tank on the bottom, install an overflow, and use a durso. Can't get any more foolproof than a gravity feed system.

i thought i may be a little bit lol, do you know of a DIY link to something like your talking about? This will be my first sump/refuge build

Unless you have experience drilling tanks, you might want to call Sal, Mike, or Josh at Saltwater City. They drill tanks.

Here are a couple links for Dursos and an online source for overflows. These are just off a Google Search. I have no personal experience with them.

I thought they were expensive as well. Informational only, hehehe! I've always purchased reef ready tanks, and have never done an after-the-fact overflow install.

The horizontal overflow is the way to go. It is also known as a Calfo overflow. The biggest benefit is that gives you the best surfacing skimming. That design that you have a link to is a little over kill in my book. Google "Horizontal Overflow" or "Calfo Overflow: and you can find a number of designs. I recently had had an custom overflow made for me for an upcoming project. My tank will only have two durso standpipes on the tank. Drilling a tank is not a big deal. There are a number of DYI threads about drilling a tank. I think there are even a few youtube vid about drilling your tank.

Yeah I talked to Sal last week about it and he said just bring the tank by. I def want the Calfo style it just looks better and takes up less valuable space in my opinion, I just wasnt sure where to put the holes and how many i needed to drill i wanna make sure my system is quiet and failsafe as said before. Also if anyone else is looking for overflow boxes Sal told me he has a guy who makes them for a good price. So def. check with him.
