Anyone here use seaklear to reduce phosphates?

I've been reading about it over on R2R and was wondering if this was still "a thing".
Can you share your experiences/methodology? Thanks
 
Haven't heard of this brand before, but I looked it up and the active ingredients is a proprietary "lanthanum salt derivative".

I'm guessing that, regardless of the anion, it operates similar to Lanthanum Chloride. Which I've used before (maybe once every 2-3 years), and have not observed any negative effects. I know a few other reefers have positive experience using it, and will do so once every year. I think Melev's Reef did a video on it.

The key piece of info that I never see discussed is that you must be running a protein skimmer while using it, in order to pull out the bound phosphates after they react with the lanthanum.
 
I've used it before. It's best set up on a drip directly before a very small micron filter sock that can immediately catch the precipitate. It can be dripped before a protein skimmer but it has the tendency to coat plastics. Regardless of how you do it the point is to catch and remove the bound phosphate.
 
Seaklear just came in...waiting on 5 micron filter socks to arrive.
Tested the phosphates in my DT and its a whopping 1.42. Yikes but all of my lps look happy and puffy. Fish look happy too.

I'd guess that my rock is leaching phosphates. I started with dry reef rock.
 
I'm dripping kalk and put a .5 mL of Seaklear into the kalk container. The container drips into a 5 micron sock.
It seems to be working - my phosphates dropped to .25 (API). I'll keep it going another week and re-check with the Hanna.
Corals look the same. Euphillya still puffy.

I put a monti back into the DT to see if it'll survive and then will slowly introduce acros

I would drip into your overflow. This will give the lanthanum time to bind with the phosphate and form particulate before hitting the sock. If all of the lanthanum isn't used up in the sock some particulate will form afterwards and start dusting the sump and possibly the display.

Mixing the Kalk and the Seaklear is not something I'd do. But if it's working, then good for you!
 
Yep the sock is in the overflow. I had reservations about mixing the kalk and seaklear and intended to do it temporarily until I found a another drip container.
But it seems to be working OK...and you know how temporary things have a tendency to become permanent. I will likely revisit the set up sometime in the near future.
I'm keeping a close eye on the corals and my chaeto reactor. And I've also been using a turkey baster to blow detritus from my rockscape every few days.

I mean to drip it upstream of the actual sock. Like in the overflow at the display.
