I just got off the phone with a sales rep from a online store and he recommended a Skimz Monster 201. The skimmer I was going to get was a Octopus xp2000 but I never heard of this Skimz brand so Im kinda worried about purchasing this. Anyone have any input on these Skimz? Thank you

In this hobby, word spreads like wildfire... so having never heard of them, that would be red flag number one. A Reef Octopus in hand is worth two unknowns in the bush, you know?

Check with mojo on reef2reef. He has used a skimmer. But then again apparently he has A thing for changing skimmers constantly. Also reef octopus is a proven winner. Skimz is new on the market

Skimz is HUGE in Asia, seeing them everywhere there.
I believe they're Australian made or so?

Definitely not a proven product in the US...

Is there a difference in Asia tanks and ones here in America?

Singapore company. Same exact skimmer as a few other brands. Uses an Italian pump that's 1.21 gigawatts better than anything octopus uses.

Nope, I just know for a fact the Italian pump is better quality than the Chinese pump. Name any other skimmer brand that uses a chinese pump and I'll make the same claim.

Edit: Warner Marine's "new" skimmers are just rebadged skimz skimmers. I forget what other brand did the same.

I wouldn't doubt that an italian made pump is better than a chinese. However I don't have anything bad to say about the super reef octopus pump

I use to run the Sicce pumps, those were garbage!! I'll take my Chinese Bubble blaster pump any day! I've been running Octopus skimmers since I started in the hobby, and they have always been great.

Let me throw this into the picture. I have a 110 gal tank with a 30 gal sump/refuge. The skimz he recommends is rated for 553 gal if I'm not mistaken. Is that over doing it? Or should I stick with the 180 gal xp2000? I'd rather be safe than sorry later on.

the size depends on bio-load more than tank size. I have a octo 110 on my 90 with light to moderate load, no issues. Octo 160 on 40B FOWLR with large load, no issues.
another octo 110 on a 100g trough, nothing but LR, no issues.
If it fits in the sump or cabinet, go as large as possible. :)

How much of a price difference is it? What happens if there is a warranty claim. Is there a local delaer. Or are you going to have to pay 50-100 shipping with a 1 month turn around for a warranty claim?
