I was trying say it in simple layman's terms.That ^ is referred to as passivation and the green tint that results is often called a Patina
I'm in the fastener industry and deal with quite a few different plantings and finishes. Passivation in several grades of stainless also refers to the reduction of carbon in the 1st few microns of the surface. This limits corrosion.
When I collected coins it was called "toning" as well.
