I'm comparing the apex to reef angel.

For apex wireless control the instructions say to connect the apex to your router. Once all the port fwding is taken care of do you have to keep the Ethernet cable plugged in? I can't imagine everyone has an Ethernet running from their system.

Take a look at the comprehensive guise, on Neptune's website. The short answer is that you will need a "Gaming adapter" to use wireless. Basically, it's an Ethernet cable from the Apex base unit to the gaming adapter, and then the gaming adapter handles the wireless connection.

Doesn't Apex have a wireless module? Not a statement but a question.

The WXM module is sometes called the wireless module, however it is only for controlling supported Ecotech pumps wirelessly. Not for connection to the wireless network to the Internet.

Good to know. One day I will get an apex (unles I can get you to build me a PLC first). :-)

currently i have my apex plugged directly to my router since its in the same room. i will be getting a gaming router when i move it soon. netgear has a pretty simple one that can be had for about $30 on amazon.

Apex does not have WiFi capabilities. It only supports wired network connections. Most people use a wireless gaming adapter if they want WiFi (as the others have said above). You should not update the Apex firmware over WiFi, however.

The reefangel definetly has wifi. It was pretty easy to setup as well. The more I learn about the reefangel the more impressed I am with it. Get the plus version so you have more memory to do what you want and not be limited

So it looks like the apex out of the box will need to be wired to my router via Ethernet unless I buy gaming adapter to go wireless. The reef angel out of the box cannot connect to the router however if I purchase the Wi-Fi adapter I can connect wirelessly.

I knew this thread had a good chance of becoming a reef angel vs apex debate which I am not against since I am currently researching both units before making any purchase.

The apex is highly recommended by all. When I did my research I went with the reefangel because of price first, and our of the box supports PWM dimming of my LEDs, wanted to learn to program, and heard the customer service was awesome if I got in over my head.
