Hey Guys,

I have been receiving a ton of emails on my AI and the Herbie method -
Thought you might get good information from these videos I made

thanks,

Brian

Edit: Sorry for the double videos - pretty cool that the forum program embeds the video with the link -

I then do herbie again out of that tank to the basement. The loudest part of the system now is the low hum of the Hammerhead in the basement. Is yours very loud?

FWIW - I bought a Kill-a-Watt the other day and it's only pulling 237 watts!!!! I was blown away by that as it's a monster pump.

yea - Its a great water pump - I have two - one for backup that is hooked up as well -

yea you can hear a low hum even on the 3rd floor if you listen for it -

I am thinking of building some type of baffles to see if that will lower the sound - cryptic fuge ... I need to do some research on that any good links ?
right now i have a 40g Fuge -

Great video. I'm doing the Herbie on my build and feel very good about the effectiveness it will have. (Safety too) Looks like we're on the same page across the board! Lights, controller, vortech, Herbie, remote sump. You just did it bigger!

very cool. thanks for taking the time to do it!
i would love to see a vid of your basement setup as well!

i have/using 3/4 for the return, 1" for the main drains, and 3/4 for the emergency drains. do you think the return will be ok as 3/4? it is the size for the return on the wahoo pump i have. thanks
mike

Nice job explaining it! Oddly enough, I decided to do Herbie overflows about two hours ago... I would do a Bean Animal system, but I didn't take that into consideration when I ordered a regular RR tank.

I would think ... but again every system is different - are you using loc-line I think that most of those are 3/4 if I am not mistaking - I am not an expert here

I will take a video soon on the basement set up -

are you running your returns over the back of the tank ?

How big is your DT? Dims too. Trying to get an idea of the coverage people are getting from their AI's. I've yet to hang my AI's over my 120g and thinking I will need a third as well.

My tank is 72x24x 30 inches deep -
Seth check out this link - they just posted this not to long ago -

due to many people bleaching their corals with the power of the AI they have changed their rec's

they key is to get the lights off the water - mine are 8 inches (as high as i could go )
so i am swapping out the 40 degree optics for the 70 degree to give me more spread

I am thinking that I can get by with 3 units - need to get access to a par meter though -

how long is your tank ?

Edit: sorry..... forgot to answer one of you questions display is a 220g

That gives me hope that I can get away with two. Let me know if you get PAR measurements. It would be really interesting to see what the difference would be with the two different optics. With a 30" deep tank I would think the 40 degrees would be beneficial for penetration if you wanted to grow things in the sand bed. But then again, with them closer to the water it might off set the optics.
Luckily I will have a fully adjustable lighting rail system. I will start with them 12" AWL and adjust as needed. I'm going to run them front to back to start and see if I get the spread that I want. If not, I will try running them lengthwise like you.
47" long

yup, loc-line over the back returns... thanks
mike

I'm thinking about putting the AI lighting over my 93 (30x30x24) cube. Do you think 2 fixtures would work? Is there any advantage/disadvantage to using the apex controller vs the AI controller?
Thanks for the video!

All depends on how high you hang the AI - if they are right on the water no way

Also where is your rockwork ? the charts says three - FWIW I would start with two and get them as high as you can - you can always switch out the 40 degree for the 70 Degree optics

Just my thoughts - Again I dont have a par meter on me but if you look at other forums they have some specs - I am not even running at high output (about 40%) so i have plenty of room to go

I was corrected today about my plumbing. I guess I'm not doing the Herbie method after all. It's the "Bean Animal" Total of three drains. Two main and one emergency. Same quietness results though.

Nice write up bro - I like the AI demo as well. I have been thinking long and hard about doing 3 on my 180 and you showing the bar rail and how it mounts is identical to how I would do mine. My only problem is I can only get them about 4-6" off the water surface. I would most certainly bleach all my corals and have to use an additional module to get the spread, unless you think 90* reflectors would do the trick?.
