I am researching basic controllers right now since I have accumulated enough livestock that a heater malfunction would be bad and expensive. I do not do any real dosing at the moment and probably will not for a long time. I do not really keep SPS. I am looking for a controller that will measure and log temperature and have the option to measure and log pH, conductivity, and other parameters in the future should I need to. I will probably look to buy something used if possible.

I plan to build myself a controller out of an Arduino and sensors (I have already bought much of it), but I do not have the time right now and I do not want to trust my tank to something I threw together. I would rather have the tank controlled and run my makeshift system alongside the good one to test it.

Anyone have any suggestions as far as brand and model?

I’d go for a used apex. Either the newer model or a lite. You could prolly find a light with eb8 for less than $200 maybe $150

I would suggest looking for a used Apex EL model, which can be upgraded to do everything you mention, as you are ready.

I use GHL WIFI mini's on my tanks. It has a 4 port bar with a temp and pH probe. Works for what I want without being overly complicated.

I like my GHL products. Probably not the cheapest option, But great reliability, a little time consuming to get setup but once you get through that, my products have been rock solid.

I use GHL doses and agree with @Wmb0003 comments. Set up can be a bit of a challenge but rock solid once dialled in...for their dosers.

I was looking at GHL a few months ago as my long term option. Right now I just do not have the resources to purchase their stuff. Just have to save up.

Hydros here. Very easy to buy a basic model to see if you like it, then add on. That is what I have done. Very happy.
