Here is an idea I thought of. Like to here comments.
I took a canister filter and I am using it as vacuum. I put on a syphon tube and added extra filter pads to the canister filter. Started the filter and vacuumed the sand while my system was running. Here's a pic

The nice thing is that I could vacuum my tank for hours if I wanted too. I will still continue to vacuum normal while during water changes. Also works well for my sump. Don't have to drain while cleaning my sump out.

Again, thoughts and comments.

Cool idea I use a bucket head shop vacation to clean my sump firming water changes this way you could do it whenever

Good Idea!! I like it! Did Jorge teach you that one?:D

I guess you could use A PUMP and a filter sock as well. i like the ease of use though with the caniter

some tips:

Get a long syphon tube (helps with not sucking up sand)

Set the canister on the floor to have more head pressure or you will suck up sand. Guess you could valve it.

I hooked up mine to an outlet on my apex. I then can control it with my phone while on the ladder. Believe it or not, it really helps.

Might also be good to run the return line back to the sump (mine sump is in the other room, so returned the water back into dt) and into the filter socks for double filtration.

I have 3 cannister filters (Eheim 404's) from my freshwater tank that I tried this with but I ended up plugging it up with sand and getting REALLY frustrated. So, longer siphen and place on the floor? Or are my pumps a lot more powerful than yours? I was hoping to get the little bits of cyano out of my tank before it was an issue.

Edit: oops, fluval 404's
I had planned on posting two of them for sale.

Not sure about power but you do need to control the syphon by pinching the tube. I use a 18 tube. Works like a charm. You could valve the outflow side of the filter.
