Recently I bought a two year old pair of clowns from premier aquatics last weekend and they seemed to be super healthy when I bought them. For about a day they would swim around the tank but after that they would stick to more the top right of my 40 gallon I’m actually worried about them there also a pretty big pair of clowns one is about two inches and the other clown is about 1 inches I can’t tell though if it’s two much flow for them which I doubt or if there trying to lay eggs if anyone could help that would be great.OH one more thing sometimes the bigger clown kinda likes to just float a little up wards and rest on my returns.

They are called clowns for a reason. They are silly fish. That floating you see is sleep. And they are "hosting" that corner. My clowns sleep at the top corner of our tank. It's typical behavior for them. Once the mating dance starts, they get even crazier in their movements. The twitching and shaking is kinda cute/kinda scary if you've never seen it before.

I’m glad you told me should I get an anemone for them or something so they can host that instead or just let them be?

I wouldn’t put an anemone in the tank yet. Tank looks fairly new. Better to wait.
The clowns look to be doing what is normal for them. Glad you aren’t seeing aggression between them - enjoy their silly antics - it’s one of the more enjoyable things in our tanks IMO.

Oh ok well I’m glad to know that many reefers believe that this is normal my tank has been running for almost a year and a half.If they have eggs or baby eggs does anyone have rotifiers for them

I love this question, it's one of my favorites I see pop up from time to time. Clown fish really are goofballs. I have one in my display that "hosts" in a large mushroom at the top right part of my tank. Whenever I get close, he scoots over there and "hides" under a mushroom that doesn't really cover him at all. Another pair I have seem to spend most of there time near a single rock and for some reason when they get nervous, they go near-vertical (head down) and just chill. A lot of time it really does look like something is wrong. Once they get comfortable you'll notice them swimming around and investigating more but if that's their spot, whenever they get nervous they'll dart over there.

I'd also like to 2nd what @lmm1967 said and would encourage you to wait on an anemone. I set up a 20 IM AIO and added the clownfish pair after 2 months but waited an additional 4 months for the tank to mature before adding an anemone. Clown's are pretty hardy but an anemone needs a good well established and balanced environment in which to thrive.

A clown breeder from Athens, GA; James Cook used this in his clown tanks:

A simple and cheap was from the clowns to lay their eggs. A smooth surface and easily removed from tank to harvest the eggs if one decides to try and hatch the eggs.

BEWARE ! If you decide to travel down that road, the road is very challenging and many, many, many obstacles will appear on that road.

A great place to start your research is just a few clicks away in ARC’s Breeder Corner.

A reef tank isn’t a reef tank with no clowns around. Think of the circus that use to come in town. Most memorial events at the circus always involved some clowns.

Same with a reef tank. The clown fish make the day! Always a joy to investigate a reef tank to see what the clowns are up to. The clowns allow one to step away from one life’s difficulties in the moment and enter into their world. I call this PRICELESS.

Next time you visit a Reef Store; visit the clown fish and let them bring you into their world.

I just wanted to let everyone know I have the tank for over 1 and a half it has been established for a year and half if there was any confusion but I’m so thankful for all the support
