A few months ago I posted that my one of Scarlet Skunk cleaner shrimp was carrying eggs and I anxiously awaited their release. I had read up on them and found that most people thought the eggs would quickly disappear in the tank, food for all of the critters within. Even if they didn’t the general consensus seemed to be that raising the baby shrimp was nearly impossible and I should just accept it. Sure enough, the morning after the eggs were released they were all gone – at least as far as I could tell.
Just a few weeks ago I noticed tiny translucent specs darting around under some of the live rock and plants. They were too small to identify and my camera wouldn’t focus on them to get me a better view. I sat back and waited to see what developed.
Now, nearly a month later, they are very obviously tiny shrimp. They’re still clear so I can’t tell if they’re going to grow up to be cleaner shrimp or if they’re possibly from my two peppermint shrimp. I’ve never noticed eggs on the peppermints though so I’m hopeful that they’re cleaner shrimp. There are dozens of the little buggers swarming all over the live rock and they seem to be doing great.
The tank is almost all corals with a few brittle stars, shrimp, and the CUC. The lack of fish probably accounts for the baby shrimp surviving as long as they have. I hoping they’ll continue to grow and thrive!
Has anyone else had any luck raising cleaner shrimp? If so, I’d be interested in hearing about your experiences.
