Where is the best place to buy cheap base rock? The LFS sells it for $2-3 a pound. Are there cheaper options? Any specific type of base rock that you guys recommend? Lace rock, slate rock, volcano rock?

Looking for suggestions. Is it worthwhile to call the Rock landscaping companies?

Best bet would be local members. You can sometimes get it for 1$ a lb. I like the pukani myself

Best bet is to use the aquascape cement? I'm assuming you use it outside of the water

Whatever you do, don't use volcano rock. It's got iron in it.

Definitely keep an eye here and you'll find it for $1/lb. You may even find live rock for as low as $1.50/lb. Personally, I don't like the aquascape cement. What if you ever want to redo or have to move a rock...you can't. Either use natural laying or drill holes and use acrylic rods.

I love using Pukani from Bulkreefsupply.

The reason I like it is that it is SUPER easy to form. Don't like stacking round rocks into a rock pile? Then take Pukani, a hand cutter , even a hack saw, and MAKE what you want.

Its very porous, too.

The only issue that has been reported with it is some say it can leach PO4. I have acid cooked my last few batches, and haven't had that issue at all.

Just my favorite for rock... I'm sure others will have theirs....

I'll try to find the thread that shows how I cut the last pukani scape.

Agree, its the easiest to work with.

Pukani seems like a good option then

I watched some YouTube videos of people making their own liverock using Portland cement and a few other items.

Any experience with that?
