I've become involved in a few forums, and groups on facebook, and run into far more people than I could have imagined who dove straight into the hobby without realising the complexities it has. I've put together a form people can go through before following through with a purchase, or to catch themselves up if they got in hastily.

The “BEFORE I START A REEF AQUARIUM” knowledge STARTER KIT:

WHAT ARE?
Bristleworms:
Asterina Stars:
Brittle Stars:
Aiptasia:
Majano:
Spionid Worm:
Pineapple Sponge:
Coralline algae:
Hair algae:
Bubble Algae:
Chaetomorpha Algae:
Cyanobacteria:
Diatoms:

WHAT IS?
Live Rock:
Live Sand:
Tank Cycle:
Protein Skimmer:
Return Pump:
Wavemaker/powerhead:
PAR requirement:
Metal Halide/T5/LED:
Flow requirement:
Cleanup Crew:
“Reef Safe”:
Water changes:
Minimum tank size for a Tang:

SAFE RANGES?
Salinity:
Temperature:
Ammonia:
Nitrate/Nitrite:
Phosphate:
PH:
Calcium:
Alkalinity:

I'd add "Sump" to your "What IS" (and "do I need?" list if you start branching it out). also in Safe Ranges maybe a "How often to test?"

Other than that it's a pretty comprehensive starter pack you've got there.
