I'm all about patience and allowing my tank to cycle properly. I know going into it with all dead rock and just 20lbs of live sand I was in for a longer waiting period........................but this s#$(@#&*@)!!!!!!!
This is a very good test for patience! I was so excited adding the rock, sand and water on November 29th at 8:04pm. Then I started testing and starring at my glass waiting for the first spot of diatoms to show up. I'm starting to see plenty of gold spots throughout the rocks and on the sand. Now if that ammonia and nitrites would just drop to zero I'd be good!
Na, just let it keep doing its thing, thats most likely the dead stuff in your dry rock causing the ammonia to spike. You shouldn't need to do a water change until you're ready for livestock.
I've actually got something that came with my rock. It almost looks like some type of weird crab or something. All you can see are two things that look like legs sticking out. This wasn't even visible until a couple days in the water. Should I remove it or let whatever it is die off?

You are going to see many creepy crawlies popping up over the next week or two. While it made me nervous each time I saw something new, it was also fun to see what comes to life. Pretty cool process since I didn't put any of it in there. LOL
i totally agree, but my tank is only 2 weeks old. If this thing was a micro-organism when I started, I won't be able to feed it for very long before it takes over the house!
I say you will start seeing a decline this week in ammonia levels. No w/c imo I know it is difficult with the state of the art W/C system just sitting there.
LOL. Amen brother! It would only take a matter of 5 minutes to complete a 20% WC. No buckets to haul or anything. Now.............if I could just put it to work !
